Hello everyone, I am currently in the process of having a new windshield professionally installed in our 73 fastback and after having them put the primer and adhesive on the windshield wouldn't fit in the frame. The new unit was about a half an inch to tall. The vertical measurent was 17 1/4" on it and I don't have the old one to use as a reference. Can someone measure the windshield on their fastback/mach 1 in the middle from the top to bottom and let me know what it is. I'm thinking the one they ordered was for a coupe or convertible.

Thanks.

Mike if they're the windshield professionals and they accepted the job, I'd insist they followed through on the agreement rather than passing "their problem" on to you. Windshields for your 73 are readily available. It sounds as if they tried to install the wrong windshield. The primer and adhesive wouldn't add an 1/2" height. Good luck!

Oh I absolutely agree with you guys and I haven't paid a dime yet. I am just trying to satisfy my curiousity as to what happened other than the obvious fact that they ordered the wong one lol. They are supposed to be taking care of the the problem and getting the "correct" windshield and making it right.

I have the windshield out on my 73 Mach 1 and I measured the windshield at the center and it was 26 1/4 inches. Not sure what vertical measurement you are looking for since you said 17 1/4 (Typo?). Let me know exactly want you want and I can get the measurements for you.

Thanks man, maybe thats what I meant lol. My car currently has two covers and a foot snow on it so I'll have to let things thaw out before I can check things out again.

I measured the new windshield top to bottom from the halfway acrossed point to get the measurement, odd thing was it seemed like it fit before he put the adhesive on.

The Fastback does not share the same windshield as the Coupe/Convertible.

The 1971 - 1973 Coupe/Convertible share the same windshield as the 1971 - 1973 Cougar.

To clarify for the above posters. Safelite came to my house early last week and pulled the old cracked windshield out {they offer mobile glass service}, upon removal of the old unit I noticed some minor rust issues that I wanted to address while the old winshield was out with the intention of having them come back that friday and install the new one and give me time to make the needed repairs. Well as Oklahoma weather would have it, it got crappy here for a couple of days and I didn't want them doing the install in the rain bringing us to this week, tuesday to be exact. The required repairs were made and the tech shows up around 2:30 p.m. to install the new winshield but it didn't fit. The tech said he would order another and get back with me.

Knowing the weather was going to turn bad for a few days and that we were looking at some pretty heavy snowfall I thought it would be a good idea to put the covers on the car to keep the interior dry lol. As of today there is still snow everywhere and I have no windshield.

Just got off the phone with them and our suspicions were correct that they ordered a windshield for a coupe {they called it a 2 door hardtop} making it to tall to fit the frame. They ordered the correct one and measured it, and it is indeed shorter ;-}. Going to have to let the snow melt before they can install it. I'll let you guys know the outcome:s

Cool. Sounds like a good shop.

At least they followed through and found you the right windshield. Post up some close-up pics of the new windshield showing how the tint at the top looks and the color of the tinting at the bottom. I'm curious if it looks close to stock.

Okay, will do. The upper part of the ill fitting new winshield looked almost sprayed on while the bottom tint had a cleaner line to it. The sides were tint free.

To bring us back to this discussion (I am trying to order one now). I have been told there are three winshields for the car from the various shops (coupe, hardtop, and vert). I would guess that the hardtop was the right one, but your post has me worried.
