I have obsessing over my drivers side wiper arm sitting up higher on the windshield than the passanger side. Did a search on the forum this morning and learned there is a winter vs. summer adjustment. I never knew this before. How do you adjust between these two settings. It appears as though the fixture on the arm is adjusted. HOW?

Post that helped me learn this.

Brian, you slid the black arm off of the silver - splined transmission arm. Lift up the arm then slide it off.

Your can slide it back on in various areas of the splined section.

That will change where it sits

Going off of memory here so I may be wrong. Isn't there an alignment key on the transmission stub?

I may have found my problem. While looking back at the post I included above I beleive the part attached to the transmission stub from my wiper arm is still attached to the transmission. I have attached the only picture below I could find of the wiper linkage without the arms installed and if you notice the passanger side fixture is on the transmission stub and I beleive the driver side was the same. I will see if I can remove the drivers side tonight and adjust that fixture.

modern cars have this also

winter and summer modes for the wiper arms

in the winter you want the wipers peaking above the hood because the sun will come out and melt the ice that the wiper rubber gets stuck to on the window and can rip the blade rubber.

in the summer months you drop the wipers back under the hood for looks and aerodynamics ;)

on older mustang the blades were on the cowl and always were above the hood shadow line, so there wasn't a need for winter and summer modes.

Guys, I just went through the 1971 Ford shop manuals and found no mention of a summer or winter setting/adjustment. Don at OMS had the answer as far as I can tell. Maybe there is a reference I haven't found. If there is please point me to it so it can be added to "I didn't know that file".

Lift arm, insert pop rivet into the hole which takes spring pressure off the arm. Slide up and off carefully. I usually place rags, towels, etc around everything to avoid scratches in the case of inadvertent movement while removing the arm. Not that I take the arm on and off very often, but I also apply a little bit of NeverSeize to the shaft. Re-position as needed. Wet windshield during 'dry' run of the wipers to ensure proper positioning.

Makes sense that back in the early 70's you could adjust the park position of the 'hide-away' wipers to allow the sun to defrost things in the snowbelt regions. But, somehow I don't see too many of us driving our 71 - 73's (or any other vintage classic) during the winter season these days.
