Car needs exhaust system work.

I'm hesitant to use a national chain

outlet like, I won't mention names, so

I started a chat session with Capitol Ford

about exhaust work. They replied only

factory replacement work. Fine, I have

a 1971 Mustang purchased at this dealership.

There was a long pause and then timed out:huh:

Started another chat and they took my phone

number for a service rep to call me. Been two

days and have not heard anything. I think it

would be really cool to have the factory exhaust

system installed. Capitol Ford likely has access to

a warehouse network that may still have that part.

I told the chat session this car was purchased there

42 years ago I am taking you to task. The response

was "Excellent". Let the Games begin.

HI,

You may want to check with Blake at Precision Auto (860-617-0556). His company manufactures beautiful reproduction exhaust components for our cars. I recently bought an H pipe for my 429CJ project car, and am extremely pleased with the quality, fit, and finish. He was very pleasant to deal with, and the part was shipped quickly. Nope, I don't know the guy or have any other personal interest in his business. I have just bought so much junk over the years that was supposed to be "like original", and it is always a pleasant surprise to receive something that is as nice or nicer than expected.

How are the prices?

here is a question I would ask them, are they going to use OEM parts or out of a catalog parts?

I went from a single exhaust to a Dual exhaust with a Kit I bought from a Mustang supplier near me.

it took me 1 hr to cut out the old one 45 min to install the new dual exhaust, no fitment issues, which I was suprized it went as smooth as it did.

I am a dealer for Precision Exh

What do you need ?

Don't know yet. At least a piece of tailpipe

but should probably replace the whole system.

I have never scrimped on this car when it came

to parts. Then there is the problem of installing

it since I lack the environment to do that. Bought

a Centerforce II clutch and a local Mustang shop

wanted $750 to install it. Would like to get the

dealership involved, the car's 42nd anniversary is

April 2nd. I don't want to take the car to a generic

muffler shop.

I'm 90% certain that dealers are only required to have replacement parts for up to 10 year old cars.

The only reason they keep common older parts is because there is a demand for it.

They don't do welding and bending and they wouldn't keep a part as big as a muffler system in any warehouse.

My dealer found I had a damaged expansion joint on my daily driver. They wanted to replace the whole cat pipe from

the header to in front of the muffler including the cat and o2 sensors for $900 because that's where it easily unbolted. A muffler shop welded in a new expansion joint for $100.

A reputable muffler shop can make a nice custom stainless steel muffler system for a reasonable price. Why not go that route?

Or buy from a Mustang supplier like a post above (I didn't know they make repros for 71-73).

Besides why would you want stock mufflers anyway? It felt like it gained 20hp when i replace the PO's stock style mufflers with Flowmaster 40's.

I was the shop foremen at a Ford dealer for 14 years and we would not even touch your car. The shop would sublet your car down the street to an local exhaust shop.I would say if your dealer says they will do the job there going to call some aftermarket supplier and get some generic kit. Besides the factory exhaust was obsolete at least 15-20 years ago.

I would talk to Don about the Precision Exh or ask around town who does the best custom exhaust.

I would put a nice flowing exhaust behind that 4V motor and let it breath.

I am beginning to believe that. Was having second thoughts about

a factory exhaust. The engine likely came with a 600 CFM carb and

probably a matching exhaust system. We now have a 770 Holley

and will need a matching exhaust system, I think that sounds right.

Thanks for the advice. Now to find a place to do the work and contact

Don of OMS.

Mike PM sent

I had a local exhaust shop make a complete 2-1/4" dual exhaust for my 65 for $350 or so. It included 2 magna flow straight through type mufflers.

Just received my exhaust system from Don of OMS.

Made by Precision Auto with Precision Performance

mufflers. All new hanger assemblies from NPD and

FoMoCo exhaust clamps from CJ. Sometimes you

have to shop around

One might ask why I would pay shipping charges

for an 85 pound exhaust system sent from Connecticut

to California, about as far away as you can get and

still be in the same country, when I could have bought

this locally. Anyone who has done business with Don

already knows the answer.

{chanting} Video. Video. Video.

With sound of course. ;)
The plan is to change the pumpkin, install the exhaust and SS

fuel line; then a burn out before I buy new tires.

When you think about this car it is Don Witt from front bumper

to gas cap and 75% in between (interior, engine, pumpkin, exhaust,

grill etc.

Better be a Good burn out, huh? May need to hire Jeff Gordon.

I have front disks so should be able to make the car disappear in

a cloud of smoke while standing still.

The reason I'm asking for a video is because I also need a new exhaust and you're my guinea pig. Plus I've never heard a stock exhaust. I don't want obnoxious but a mild rumble would be nice.
