My Car
1968 Coupe: 393w, TKO-600, Maier Racing springs, Global West suspension, Currie 9in with forged axles, 3.50 gears, Trutrac, Baer brakes front/rear
1973 Mach-1: 351c 4V, C-6, 3.73:1 gears and a long "To Do" list..
I've come to the conclusion that I am going to go with 17x8 (4.5" BS) wheels on the front and 17x9.5 (5.5" BS) in the rear of my '73 Mach-1. I was looking at the American Racing wheels: Torque Thrust-2's and their VN 500 "Custom 500's". I was quoted a little over $500 for the rears and about $490 for the fronts. $2000 seems like a lot of money for wheels. Am I crazy or is that just what they cost?

Supply=Demand.

I didn't spend $2k on my steering wheel. I don't intend on spending $2k on a set of wheels.

Hmm.. Ok, thanks everyone.

Don't sound so depressed...say THANKS EVERYONE!!!!

What you ought to do is CHALLENGE US to find something better for much less!!!! Make us put our mouths where are fingers are typing....good luck with that.

I have been through the $2k wheel thing....put it off, put it off...put it off. Now I am saying WHAT WAS I THINKING!!!! $2K???

Next time, get 100 $20 bills, tape them to the wall. And then decide whether which looks better...those wheels on your car or those Jackson's on the wall.

Of course I appreciate everyone's input. I know everyone here could be on another forum fighting the 2v vs 4v head debate. Just trying to figure some things out and I don't know where to start. I need to get my wheels before I can finish the rear suspension because the new springs lower the car 1 1/2", but due to the wrong backspace now, I don't have 1 1/2" to go. I know I have to get my wheels/tires before I can get my brakes. But I just want to buy wheels just once. But of course I appreciate everyone's help.

I went with American Racing Torque Thrust II rims 16 x 7 front and rear with Goodyear Eagle GT tires (225/55R16) and paid $1288.69 for the whole package from TireRack.com, mounted balanced and shipped to my door.

Give them a call they were great. They beat the snot out of all local suppliers.

Nice.. Thank you.

I went with 15" Magnum 500's 7 inch in front with 225 60's and 8 inch 245 60's in back. The tires are BFG T/A's. They came mounted, balanced and delivered to the door from CJ's for $1,098. I have the original stock suspension and the 245's barely fit.

That's strange, I have 295's in the back now. There's plenty of room but the back space is wrong.

Ya..its the size of tire that cost you too more than stock 15inch..And plus tires have realy shot up in price!!!..Heck my little escort wagon i use to drive to work...13 inch tires...only costed me 20 buck a tire to replace...80 bucks for all 4.....before i sold the car few years go..I put some new tires on it..and my eyes about poked out of my head when i seen the price..250 bucks for 13's!!...My little ranger truck too...last time i got tires for it...I got rung up too 400ish for 14's after taxes...But i dont see why you cant save a easy 500 bucks from the price you was qouted...that does seem a bit high...But like others said..Off the rack and in your face always cost more..lol

Well, if anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them. Since my plan is a set of Baer brakes, I need at least a 17" wheel (though I am open to 18's. I'm more concerned about the look. I would like something "period correct" such as the Torque Thrust-D style or the Ansen Slot mags. I'm looking for 8" wide in front (4.5" BS) and 9-9.5" in the back (5-5.5 BS). It's obviously going to cost at most $500 per wheel. If anyone has a less expensive option, I would like to hear from you.

Mike

Shit you blokes have it easy/good over their, the 18' rims and tyres, I got put on my 72 mach before it was shipped down under cost about $2kUS the same here would have been well over $3.5k...

$100 bill wallpaper would be pretty badass though!!!

Do you know what offset or backspacing they are?

You can call them and tell them what you want and they will put an auction together for you. I would buy my tires separately so that you can check wheel run out before mounting. This was the route I went and I was very happy. Notice it is free shipping too!

and I forgot to mention. . . I have Baer Ironsport brakes and while they are nice, the parking brake function is very poor regardless of the adjustments it is either too loose or the wheels are locked up. I would look at other options if I were doing it again.
