I need to replace my Original windshield (its had a nasty crack that is growing).

Its covered by my insurance, but I want to remove all of the parts that could be damaged during the installation.

the question I have the Chrome around the windshield, how does that come off?

I was planning to taking it off my self so Safelite tech's don't damage the chrome. or should I have them do it?

the sad part the windshield is the Original (carlite), but I Cracked it while removing the wiper arms a few months back, and now the crack has gotten bigger, so its in my line of site :(

Sun visor brackets and inside header trim have to come out to get to the stainless windshield studs for the top trim

Sides have exposed screws at the top and bottom ends.

It is all chalked / sealed with old gummy sealant

I would take a bunch of pictures of the trim - inside and outside

Let them do it - if they damage anything or trim isn't sealed right they have to fix it.

Maybe call the glass co - see if they have an older tech that you could schedule to do it.

I also would tell them I do not want the glass hung on the driver side window with their new installation tool, that swings the glass over.

That might be OK for newer cars as the windows are in a frame, our side windows aren't that solid.

Thanks Don, you have some very good points.

As for the stainless trim bottom screws, I never put them beck when I had the Fenders off a few years back, I totally forgot about them until the fenders were back on and painted.

so that's 2 less screws I have to have them worry about.

also I was thinking of removing the dash pad, hey don't scratch the painted metal part.

Took mine to the shop it took them an extra 2 hours they had to drill out all the screws. I got their when they said to and they just got the window out so I got to clean some surface rust, wipe it down with acetone then paint it with a can of Black BBQ paint I had in the trunk. The window says Ford, Sunvisor, SunX at the bottom in the middle. They did a good job, I gave them an extra 20 to buy themselves some Subway for lunch. Payless Glass Langley BC.

I would DEFINITELY secure some NEW SCREWS for this job prior to taking it in. You might also consider securing some trim pieces just in case. You can always sell/give them away here if you don't need them.

BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST....not sure if the cowls would be easier to change/repair will the windshield is out...just a thought...

Good luck my convertible comrade in arms....comrade in glass.

GET PICTURES!!!!!!

IIRC there are also screws under the weatherstrip at the back side of the "A" pillars. There is no graceful way to remove the weatherstrip.

Jeff, so your saying I also have to take off the A-pillar weather stripping?
I believe so, it's been a couple of years since I took my trim off and polished it.

Because the Insurance is paying for the Job, all work must be done someday, once the windshield is out they said it "MUST" be reinstalled at the same time, I can't do any work other wise its Voids them paying for the glass and Labor. unless it's the wrong glass ordered.

I will contact Safelite in advance and ask questions about the Job, before completing the Claim with the insurance.

It appears that the insurance company wants to ensure the reason they have to pay for the windshield is due to a part of the comprehensive part of your policy and not due to a part of your remod/restoration plan. Is there any way for you to talk "manoa mano" (lol) to your agent/adjuster (with your pics to show your already cracked windshield) to give you and SafeCo additional time to get the rare additional parts for a 40-year-old car (including rare gaskets, rare special screws, rare caulk, rare etc.) together after the windshield is removed?

Not trying to rob a bank, fer crying out loud, just asking them to allow the Shop more time to obtain all of the rare parts and install them. It could easily by installed in a few hours if all parts are on hand at the time of installation. Just trying to help...

The ins co wants to pay safelite for one service call

Now if safelite doesn't have the correct seal

They would make a second trip out on thier dime

Yes the pillar post w-strip has to come out

W-strip channel comes out

That will expose the two side screws on the L & R windshield trim

Item #D1ZZ-7602626/7

71-73 CONVERTIBLE PILLAR POST WEATHERSTRIP

I have it in stock

Thats exactly what it is, they want to pay for service one call, I called Safelite today to ask some questions, they highly recomended I remove all of the the Rare parts that I'm worried about, just to avoid me from panicing while they are working on it, and on a 40+ yrs old car they can't guarantee that No bolt/screw will break.

Don, how much is the weather stripping?

Iyman, it is on my web site for 77.95

They are coming on Tuesday to Replace the Windshield, I took 1/2 hour to remove the Dash pad, all of the A Pillar Trim and the header trim and sun visors mounts, it turned out to be very easy.

also I spoke with the local Safelite shop doing the work, and the rep. said they are going to replace the A pillar weather-stripping, because on the Convertible it has to be removed to remove the chrome trim, so replacing it is part of the Job.
