My Car
My 13 year old wants to build a 1971-73 Mach 1 Mustang for his first car. We have found a Grabber Blue with white interior base model 1971 Mach 1 to start on.
I have spent time reading through older posts regarding 17" wheel fitment. Currently I am leaning toward a staggered set of 17's for my son's 1973 "Q" code Mach 1. I am thinking 17 X 8" front with 4.5" backspacing or 0 offset and 17 X 9 rear with 5.5" backspacing or 12 offset. I really would like to go as wide as possible in rear without rolling the outer lips or beating back the inner wheel well. Will a 17 X 9.5" or 17 X 10" fit with a 275/40 R17 tire? Please give me your suggestions.

Projected Wheel/Tire Combination:

American Racing VN527 Cobra style 17 X 8 with 0 offset and 245/45 R17 tire (tire 9.7" wide and 25.6" tall on 8" wheel)

American Racing VN527 Cobra style 17 X 9 with 12 offset and 275/40 R17 tire (tire 11.1" wide and 25.7" tall on 9.5" wheel)

I believe that you shouldn't have any problems with your tire and wheel choices. Because of the section width you can probably get away with a 10" wide rim on the back, even though the rim width will likely be wider than the tread width.

In case you haven't already found it, there's a spreadsheet here that you can play around with different combinations on, and their effects on final drive ratios, and so on. I updated it today with some additional information.
