Thats it...18,000 miles?

Wow, that is low mileage. Must be nice to have an old Mustang with such low miles and all the "newness" that entails.

My car has 355,000+ hard-earned miles on it and that brings a lot of little but annoying troubles: crispy wiring, creaky interior bits, faded mylar, clouded lenses, scratched glass, clearly worn "touch" areas, etc...

I'm jealous of such low mileage...

Kit I think you are the winner 355,000 miles of enjoyment. My car looks nice has lots of little stickers and inspection marks etc makes me reluctant to use it as much as I would like . some little code stickers fell of the wiring harness the other day. didn't know if I should try to stick em back on or just carry on enjoying it and start putting some miles on it. had a ford recall sticker on the pwr str pump dated sept 73 had to rebuild the pump as it was suffering from having just sat around now that tags gone. I like modified cars so I was going to run a ally headed roller cam 393 and go racing so far I just cant bring myself to do it. Low mileage makes mine some what special 355,000 make yours your own.

I love mine and hate it in almost equal measure. I look at it and think damn that's a slick rig. I drive it and think this thing drives nice but man its slow if only it had 100 more HP it would be fun, 350 more and its a weapon.

If the engine dies I will build the 393 and buy a kitted c4. 18000 mile I cant even feel any slack in the timing chain yet when I set the dizzy and the FMX shifts good so its not going to need a rebuild for a long time. But I have made the decision to just drive it and enjoy

I wonder if we took a mileage poll , you might be the winner for the lowest ? That's barely broke in . Don't be afraid to drive the hell out of that thing Luke !

Wow! Cool to have such documentation.
Thanks got a fair bit more too. lots of registration receipts, build sheet, service book, owners manual etc. A LAPD statement about a stolen plate in 74. Even a receipt from a hospital Lyle was admitted to in the mid 70s. Oh and I know Lyle was 55 years old when he brought the car. Cool to have. Its funny how these old cars can have a history and most 5-10 yo cars now have nothing.

Luke, your comment about it being slow is interesting to me. I have always been unimpressed with the '73 version of the Cleveland.

I suggest to modifications that will wake this motor up:

1) replace the stock timing gear set with a "zero degree" set. The factory set on '73s are retarded a few degrees due to emissions concerns and performance suffer dramatically.

2) have your stock distributor blueprinted to bring the dynamic advance in fully by 1800 rpm, and install a simple "Pertronix" electronic ignition module.

These changes will make you feel like you have an entirely different engine. It will also retain a totally 100% stock appearance, will idle smoothly and run like a raped ape.

The Cleveland deserves these changes.

Slow compared to Aussie 351s of that same vintage. Slow compared to the Chev power stuff I have had.

I hear you mod wise, I will also swap out the 2.75 gears for 3.25 - 3.5 should wake the sucker up.

problems is I know myself too well as does my best friend and engine guy, he owns a performance engine shop and is crew chief for a pro racer. he knows if I say I want to run 12.5 that's really means 11.7 450hp means 525 hp and short gears Lol, as soon as that timing cover comes off all the 1973 escapes and I know it will get out of hand fast, especially considering I only have to pay the trade rate for parts, no labour, and the heads flowed and ported for free. I guess this contributes to my reluctance to modify it. At the moment I get it out drive, it clean it and that's all. once I heat it up its spanners and broken parts every few months.

Luke,

Great car! Take lots of good photos of the car to document how it was when you got it. Then drive it and enjoy it! Lyle would want you to. Life is to short so enjoy your treasure. I know I am enjoying mine.

Hi Luke,

That is a SWEET ride! Do you have the deluxe interior option (in blue)? If so, would you be willing to snap a few pics for me? I redid my interior last year, trying to make it as original as possible... I found photos on the internet to go by, but only a few that were from a genuinely unrestored car.

More than happy to help any thing in particular you would like pics of. I won't be home for about a week will do it soon after that

With a car as nice as yours you should treat yourself to a second Mustang to put miles on (spending your money is a lot easier than spending my own). I have a 14 year old car with 6500 miles on it. I didn’t intend for it to be kept low miles when I bought it but now that is getting to be unique with its low mileage I hate to add miles.
