Yes, I'm thinking about doing just that, but still also wanting a good pan if I can find one.

 I'm with you on that one. Try to fix first as you have the pan off, but like you, I too have a dent in my pan, but too lazy to take it off and fix it. Good pans seem to be like hen's teeth around where I live, most are in bad shape.

UPDATE: Found a near perfect CJ oil pan about an hour from me and picked it up on Saturday. Will install soon. This will solve the issue; the measured clearance is 11/32" without the gasket. The sump clearance is approx. 1/2". Thanks to all for your help!
