Ideally the car would start immediately with a turn of the key...but I am far from that. the car always starts, but I am getting a sluggish crank, almost likely its struggling to crank.  same thing happens when hot or cold.  any tips on where I should start?  coil, plugs, timing, carb, starter motor?

thanks

Battery condition and voltage, make sure all cables are in good condition and have clean connections. Make sure the ground cable is run correctly, battery to bottom bolt on voltage regulator to engine block. Make sure the grounding points and bolts are clean.

Starter motor needs bebuilt or replaced, worn out brushes, lube all gone from bearings.

Timing too far advanced can cause slow cranking.

Even if you think the cables are good, remove them and clean battery terminals and all connections. Most slow starter problems are either battery or cable connection problems.

I just put in a new battery, and replaced both battery connectors, BUT, I did not replace the battery cables themselves, which are horrible and corroded. I will order some new cables.

I had this prob... for me it was the neg cable -- it was made from copper oxide, more than copper. I would have been better using my cock as the main current carrier.  :p

You need a larger gauge conductor than that :)
ROFL  lollerz  yeah -- I spose it needs to carry more than one amp
so this gives you an idea of the current condition.  I replaced the battery connectors, but did not have the new battery wires at the time.  its not helpful that the ground wire is red...I also should have cut off the corroded bit, but the wire was so short I really couldn't.  I'm ordering new wires today

Yes... ordering new wires is the ultimate humiliation I had to go through too .. enjoy it while it lasts   :D

the difference is I got mine in 20 days you get yours in 2 days ... you all piss me off  :chin:  :whistling: :D

so after reading all the comments here, I didn't really consider setting the choke before a cold start. so just now I went out to the car which has been sitting for 2 days: i turned the key to on and waited a couple of secs, then pumped the gas 2-3 times half way, then once to the floor, turned the key at 1/4 gas pedal and the car roared to life on the first crank....I will still replace the corroded battery cables in the next day or 2 since I already bought them.
