1972 "Q" code Mach 1
Do all Mach1 base dash boards come in black? I know the dash pad can be other colors to match the other trim like green pad for green interior. By base I mean the piece that mounts the Speedometer, gauges, glove box door, etc. See photo below.
Thanks

It is actually a dark charcoal not black. You need it in full sunlight to really see the color difference. To your original question, yes all of the metal frame of the dash was painted in the dark charcoal.

The correct answer is - it depends

Strictly speaking for the Mach 1 & sportsroof only.

Standard Mach 1/sportsroof interior is the base Mustang interior. All interior colors came with a charcoal black painted dash frame.

Optional Mach 1 Sports Interior optioned cars came with an interior color-matched dash frame on the green, blue and ginger interiors. All other colors came with a charcoal black painted dash frame.

I have a blue glow 1973 Mach 1 "Q" code like Doug's (except w/auto) that has a factory blue metal dash. I bought it in 75 with 24K from the original owner and still have it. The car was factory delivered with chrome exhaust tips too!

Adding to what Hemikiller said, from looking through various photos in Mustang Monthly, Mustangs of all types that had factory deluxe door panels had a color matching metal dash, same for the dash pad and steering wheel trim.

Try to find a green one. I looked for over a year and finally just got a black one and had it dyed to match the original. Green seems to be that hardest color to find.

They seems to be a common thing with vintage Ford cars. I am new to the classic mustangs but have had lots of 70/71 Torinos. Mostly Cobras and a couple GT’s and a couple hardtops. The charcoal black was used on them as well. From what I have gathered is must of the trim was kind of charcoal also. Do you know what other trim pieces in a black interior car would be?
I’m thinking the top metal dash part, the window/headliner trim the side dash pieces, maybe the kick panels. Not sure on the back side quarter panel trim pieces.
Any input would be appreciated
Also with so little of the metal dash showing because most of it is covered up by the plastic trim pieces I’m wondering if all these aftermarket trim pieces should be charcoal?
Thanks

Your car with the Mach 1 Sports Interior would have a green metallic dash frame, top sides etc.

All of the metal components of a black interior - roof headliner trim, door top trims (base interior), package tray and rear seat moldings, dash side panel and the top dash panel with the VIN tag would all be metallic black. The gloss varied by position. Top dash and package tray moldings would be "flat" to limit sun reflection, others are semi gloss.

Base interiors in blue, green and ginger would have a color matched dash pad, dash top panel, and center stack.

For the plastic parts, some were molded in color and would have a metallic in them, others were painted (A-pillar trims). Kick panels were molded in color, as were seat hinge covers, seatbelt retractor covers, quarter window trims etc. Look on the backside of the part.

The camera case dash trims used on the upgraded interiors were a non-metallic low gloss black to my knowledge. IIRC, the base cluster trim was molded in a metallic black, but it's been awhile on that.
