My Car
1973 Mustang Grande 351C 2V, built on the very last production day (July 6, 1973) for Grande's.
So... I’d like my car to be reasonably airtight, let’s say I don’t want any humid air coming in. Therefore it can’t have any holes. Is this possible at all?

I spotted a few holes in the trunk that I’m not sure of if they should be there:

Next to the LH tub:

In the RH tub:

Two on the RH side of the trunk floor:

Any idea which ones should be there and which ones should not?

Cheers,

Vincent.

Mine for sure does not have the one by the wheel inner fender. There are rubber plugs for the rest, there for assembly as far as I know, which ain't much.

First off, your car being in Europe may have different wiring for added lights etc etc. WHAT I SEE here are the factory trolley holes (eight used on a car) that get the rubber plug shown AND what was probably a rear mounted antenna. Laws there may have required a fender antenna at the time. In all cases of "holes" they got something ! A plug, a grommet or a PUSH THROUGH wire. Anything done out side of factory - be it prior to shipping , dealer installed or CONVERSION for MOT laws might be different in the area of world. (Basically sourced from what they had)

Mark

P.S. Someone has been in there...as there shouldn't be paint under the rubber plug for the trolley holes! Most "restorers" don't know that the washers were different sizes covering the holes either !

V,

Here are the pics of my original 73 and yours should be the same. Ford did not leave any open holes in the body except for drain holes in the quarter panels under the rear side windows, in bottom of doors.

There are holes in the trunk drop off on each side but they should have rubber plugs. Also the wires going to the gas tank on the left side are coming through the drop off and has a rubber grommet around it.

There is a hole in the tail light panel for the wire to tag light and again a grommet on the wire harness.

The access holes for shocks have rubber plugs.

The two round holes over the frame rails were actually weld fixture datum holes. The car never rode in assembly on them. It did sit on the holes in the bottom of the rear frame rails.

I think all the holes you have in question have been added. Ford did not drill many holes in the bodies most are punched. They did drill holes in doors and A post for the AM/FM , AM/ 8 Track wiring and boots.

I would suspect maybe someone had an electric fuel pump at some time. Very common to put inside the trunk. Some could have been for air shock fill valves also.

Thanks for those photos, can’t get any clearer.

My car is American, no euro stuff was done to it. It did have an lpg tank for which holes were made.

Yay, I got more welding to do :)
