Does anyone know how much additional clearance there is between the air cleaner and hood with the NASA hood vs the flat hood?

The flat hood has a small structural support piece that run right in the center of the air cleaner and I only have 1/4" of clearance according to my play dough test. I was hoping to add a small carb spacer to get some space between my air cleaner and HEI distributor.

I cant tell you how much clearance right now but i added a 1 " spacer to mine and still have plenty of room if you use a regular air cleaner. If you use the RAM air cleaner then that's the max since it contacts the plastic of the RAM assembly.

Edit2: i had to modify a RAM air cleaner base to make it fit though. I cut about 3/4" from the top lip and didn't use the stock seal.

Edit: you need a regular air cleaner base with an offset such as the one from Spectre

I had not thought of getting an offset base. I ordered one today to see if that will work. I was wondering about the difference between the two hoods as mine currently has the flat hood but I have a chance to pick up an original NASA hood for a good price.

The offset base is so the air cleaner fits in the RAM air opening of the hood.

If tou have the hood without functional RAM air it may not be needed. It is probable that a non-functional NASA hood has a bigger diameter opening..... i dont know.

Got it. But the offset base will also move the air cleaner back to clear the HEI distributor so I don't have to add the carb spacer.
I guess, i never thought of it but it may work. I cant remember if there is anything behind there that may interfere.

I run an offset base with no problems on my car but I have the ram air hood and a taller than stock single plane intake. The standard flat hood may indeed have difference clearances however. I am always amazed at how high the hood actually is at the center-it is much taller there than one would think. Shifting the air cleaner back should not cause any new interference issues.
