This is a newbie question...is it bad for the fan to be able to be hand rotated in both directions (when the engine is not running of course!). Is that an indicator of a loose fan belt, or some other problem?

I replaced fan blade and now noticed the normal engine temp is at least 20 degrees higher. All other systems, water pump, coolant levels seem to be ok. Wondering if loose blade will contribute to less effective cooling.

any wisdom appreciated,

Dennis

throwing this out there...

you "replaced the fan and now it runs hotter"

The replacement fan has the same number of blades?

The replacement fan is on correctly not backwards?

The replacement fan is a solid mount without a clutch?

Have you tried tightening the fan belt? It takes a fair amount of pre-load to get the tension on the belt right. Chuck

Clutch fan or fixed fan?

Yes, fan is fixed, not clutch. Not on backwards and has 6 blades instead of original 5.
All things being equal it would seem the old fan moved more air.

Was the old fan not cooling the engine or were you just concerned about the looseness issue?

If you had no cooling issues with the old fan maybe you should put it back on?

If the fan is loose enough for you to turn by hand, it's loose enough that the belt will be slipping and not turning the fan and water at the speed necessary to cool the engine. The fan and water pump require more power to turn than you can supply by hand.
