Recently had a operating system crash on a PC. Thought all was lost, but put the hard drive in a different machine as a just storage device and WALA! the pix are still there.

Don't know If it will work every time, but it is worth a try.

Good job, every time I replace a drive and try to use the crashed drive as storage I look for old files before formatting it. I have been pretty lucky with this before as well. Sometimes I have had to go through the process to de-encrypt the drive first though. I use a lot of encryption on my files to keep them safe and out of anyone else's hands.

IMG_0032.JPGI have all of my prior hard drives in a case (runs a number) and you just USB into current computer and it reads the files.

I have photos back to 2003 with my Sony MAVICA digital camera!

This is where cloud services like OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox shine.

I'm a tiny bit of a computer geek, so I don't keep anything resident on my PC that I can't afford to lose. Learned that the hard way a long time ago back when the concept of server stored files was a novel concept for companies. All of my important stuff is mirrored across two drives, and the really important stuff is automatically backed up on an external drive.
