Hello Everyone, Does anybody have a maplight for sale that is laying around for my 73?

How rare are the map lights?

My 73 has one and it works.

They are rare to find for sale. Most go for over 100.00

Was that part of the convenience group? I will have to check around and see if I have one.

David

Was not a standalone option, but part of the convenience group. Very few 71-73's I've seen had this option. Probably the mind set in the 70's was performance and sportiness and not convenience type items. I know the people I hung out with felt that anything on a car that didn't make it go faster was evil and not needed. Probably has a lot to do with the prices you see on the few that pop up for sale occasionally. I know this is not going to make Bigfootlarry feel any better, but in 1981 I paid 13.98 for a new one from Ford that I installed in my Mach1. :whistling:

Here is what the convenience group consisted of in 1973:

Automatic seat back release

Glove box lock

Parking brake reminder light

Headlight reminder buzzer

Courtesy lights under instrument panel (standard on convertibles)

Trunk light

Underhood light

Map light

I think there was one other light location behind the ash tray if you had a long console. I know I have several cars with this option and I have several parts consoles. Seems like I have 4 or 5 consoles with the light in the ash tray. Takes a different wire harness going into the console.

Will look tomorrow if it is not a downpour again.

I didn't know they were rare either the convenience group did cost $45.53 in 1973. You could get black out hood and hood locks for $18.00 I guess the wiring was expensive. The wiring in a car today costs more than the entire body ready for paint.

David, I will very carefully say (Lol) that I have not seen the ash tray light production installed on any 71-73 Stangs. One night while riding in my cousins 73 Cougar I noticed the illuminated ash tray. I somehow convinced him to let me "Remove" a few things so I could see what was under the console. If I remember correctly the harness came off of the clock harness and had a cougar ID#. I ordered one and it fit my console perfectly. Can't find the invoice with part number but believe it was a Cougar part number. If you happen to come across one of your consoles with the light could you please get the engineering # on the tape tag so I can research it. :)

I believe I have the wiring for it, if not I will splice into the door lights so it comes on when I open the doors which I think is better than using a switch everytime I want it to turn on

Steve,

Don and you are probably correct. I did not take any of the consoles out so I have no idea what vehicle they came from. The came from a hoard in Michigan. Picture of wire attached. The one I have here with the light in ash tray does not have the sticker on the wire you can see the residue of the sticker glue but it is gone. I have several others in storage I will look next time there.

I had always thought it was part of convenience group but guess not. I need to go look at my Mach 1 I don't remember if it had light or not. Console never been out of the car.
