I was on TV last night as part of the news segment. While the topic will bore most of you, I want you to pay attention to the calendar on my wall. I did not realize that it would show on the video.

Yep, saw the green Mustang on the calendar.

The topic wasn't boring at all, it was a very good subject of discussion...most college students "do have unreasonable expectations" and I agree, internships are a great way to get their foot in the door. I've seen it over and over again, college students get their degree, apply for a position at a level they don't have the "experience" for and then are shocked they don't get past the screening process. I think colleges should do a better of job of teaching a little more about real life and a little less philosophy so their students are better prepared once they step off of the mother ship.

On the college subject- I think many college graduates are very unpreparred for the real world.

They feel entitled because of their education and don't realize that many already in the workforce might have completed the same or greater level of education.

I said this back in 1980 and I still believe it - ALL college graduates should be required to intern in a fast-food establishment prior to graduation. They must complete and be graded on the same criteria in which the other employees are commonly scored. And the entire staff would have a say in their score as well. This should be a large part of their grade.

I'm sure there are other experiences but in my opinion, nothing short of military service could prepare a college graduate better for the rest of their lives.

Want fries with that????

Just my 2 cents on an Off Topic discussion. Okay maybe 3 cents...

And I almost forgot - Jeremy - the Mustang on the calendar was cool.

I am pretty passionate about what I do. My parents were first generation high school graduates and my sister and I are first generation college graduates. My dad was a welder and mom was a postal carrier. I grew up on a farm and so there were tons of chores to be done. We tried to start-up several businesses when the mill would lay people off and I was required to help out. I worked at the local grocery store starting at 16 and worked throughout college in either fast food or in grocery at Wal-Mart. I never expected to make it, but here I am in a job that I like and only a paper away from being Dr. Thomas.

I said all of that not to brag but to make a point. It takes hard work and it is something that the younger generation is not willing to do. But whose fault is it? The colleges or the educators? How about the parents? Is it only college graduates with this problem? I think it goes well beyond this. Dr. Keith Ablow pointed to the fact that we have raised a generation of deluded narcissists. They feel they are owed more straight out of the gate and don’t need to work or put their time in to earn it. We also give awards not just for first place, but for fifth. I think you hit the nail on the head, I remember when my son was playing T-ball and one of the mothers from the other team was shocked that I was keeping score I said to her how do we know who wins? She said it's about playing the game not if you win or loose....I told her there will always be winners and losers and all we were doing was create a generation of kids that would realize you don't need to work hard at anything. Your team is getting beat in baseball , don't worry you played well and we didn't keep score you get an A for coming out! You're failing classes at school, that's okay we'll pass you along to the next grade because we don't want to embarrass you by keeping you back a year.

BLEH!

Suck it up get off your lazy butts and put some effort into your life and don't expect a handout!

Sorry Rant over .......PEACE!

Yes, I believe you make some valid points but I disagree that all members of the younger generation are not willing to put in the hard work.

Yes, there are obviously some kids who are not willing (to) or do not put in the work but I can honestly say that I personally know a number of the younger generation members who have done and continue to do the hard work. This includes my Son (a Senior Engineer with Motorola and 2006 graduate of the University of Member) and my daughter (an employee of Harvard Graduate School of the Arts and Harvard 2010 graduate) who is working on her Masters at night. Believe me, my kids are not anomalies in this regard as many of their High School classmates are similarly situated. I should add that my kids (and most of their friends) attended Public inner city schools.

It is unfortunate (in my mind) that the positive situations are not routinely touted or "covered" more in the media. I attribute this (in part) to the "needs" of each past generation to tend to focus on the negatives of the generation "behind" their generation. As human beings, I have come to believe that we gravitate toward "news" that reenforces our core beliefs.

My parents (Members of the "greatest generation") thought my generation (I will be 67 this year) was "lost" and I am sure their parents had issues with their (my parents) "flapper" generation:). Quite frankly, I am exceedingly IMPRESSED (as a whole) with the generations behind me as I believe they are making a better World.

...my $.02:).
