I thought I'd chirp in on this very interesting post.
I too used Hot Rod Black for my car and I'd just like to say I think the sheen of that product looks as close to factory as you'll get without getting the original PPG black 9381 and I'm not sure that can be obtained anymore.
On my car, which is Light Pewter (not silver!!), painted in 2013, the black seems to be standing up very well. Of course you can't get any wax on it, but other than that, it's all good.
If you were not aware, there is also a Hot Rod Clear that is made especially to go over Hot Rod Black. I didn't use it, but it might have added that extra protection. The only downside, my painter thought that the build-up would be a bit too much on the hood black-out edges.
Your car looks really good and I'm happy for you that the paint issues are behind you. You had some excellent help from Greg and very good info I'll keep for my own future reference.
