My Car
1971 M-code Grande
Some pictures of the final install of a rebuilt 351C 4V long block into my 1971 Grande with toploader. The old engine cracked the block due to a poor rebuild job in the past, they over bored a couple of cylinders (That is right, 2) to .040 and everybody knows you never do that to a Cleveland. So this new engine turns up out the blue. It has matching casting numbers which are period correct for my car. The long block came with an oil pan, intake manifold and valve covers but only for protection as we have those parts from the old engine.

It also came with the remainders of the gasket set from the rebuild indicating a professional job. There were notes on the block about what needed fixing like a hole in the timing cover, leaky oil pan plug and missing bell housing dowel pin, we have all that. Plus instructions about how to break in the engine.

The empty engine bay was completely stripped, washed down and painted.

Very nice! It'll be broken in before you know it!
Thank You, it was worth the wait.

Brings up a question about the break in process.

I was told at work today you must use a 30W oil

with a lot of Zinc additive for the first few hundred miles.

We plan on changing the oil after 200 miles and again at

maybe another couple hundred miles. I am being pretty

careful about how I drive it for now, and believe me, it

is not easy

Nice looking motor. I have a 351c that i had bored .40 over and have had no issues with it since being built 3 years ago.
The broken motor was driven for 9 years after the rebuild, as far as I

can tell. This particular block was not very well rebuilt we are beginning to

find out. Only 2 cylinders, numbers 4 (water leak) and 6, were bored to

0.040  I think your engine should be fine. Clevelands are thin walled

and most people would not over bore more than 0.030; this last engine lasted

9 years to my best guess.

Looks great. You are getting close to being on the road again. Chuck
Yes, and I could not have done this without Don's help.

looks great! Im sure sounds tough not being overly hard on the engine when you are breaking it in.

You changed the oil pan. Did you confirm proper pickup to pan clearance/placement afterwards? It is actually pretty critical. You probably did, but just in case, I thought I would mention it.

If you went from one stock pan to another, the clearance ought to be close.
