My Car
1971 Mach 1, Grabber Blue w/Argent stripes. Original 2V 351C Auto, Tilt, rear defog, Black Comfortweave Interior. Under restoration. Original colors, 4V 351C, 4-Speed, Spoilers, Magnums, Ram Air. All Ford parts.
Now that I actually have a battery for the car, I am attempting to debug the power windows.  I am talking front only.

What do i need to do do get the windows moving freely.

1)  Is it best to loosen all the guides for free movement?( Not sure if that is the source of the problem.

2)  The grease in the regulator track seems kinda gummy, should I clean it all out and use a different lube?

3)  First time debugging the original power window system on these cars.  Need some advice!!

My tests:

Ran drivers window up.  Moved well then slowed near the top.  Did not move well on the way down.

Passengers side,  very slow to go up, never made it all the way up.

Nylon gears and pins were replaced.  No chunking noise.  Just slow movement.  This makes me think the lube in the regulator tracks is the issue.  HELP PLEASE!!!

Thanks!

You should take the window out and all the mechanism clean everything with kerosene I have found work great or brake and parts cleaner. The old white grease is outdated and I use Red N Tacky grease made by Lucas. https://lucasoil.com/products/grease/red-n-tacky-grease

It also works great in the power window drives inside both the front and rear pancake motors.

Clean the guide rods and make sure your anti rattle spacers are still in to prevent the window from rattling.

I do the same for crank windows and you can roll with one finger. Pics are of a 73 vert I did last winter. They work like brand new.

If you have a 73 you have to drill the retainers in the window to get out. 72 & 71 not just take bolt out.

I don't have any good pics of the fronts. On the rears take the mechanism out the bottom, the glass out the top and then the guide plate out the top. You will be surprised how much better they work.

Forgot to say. If the tracks or anything is rusty be sure and take car of that first. The grease has a rust inhibitor in it but best to eliminate then grease.

To add to David's terrific advice. Also make sure that the door window guides (triangular shaped things with a spongy felt material on the ends. I think there are two in each door) are not binding the glass against the belt line weather strips in the top edge of the door. They should be snug just enough to keep the glass from move back and forth but allow the glass to move freely. If the door glass does not go up all the way the top stops at each end of the door may need adjustment.

There are lots of repair parts for the front motors and new motors. The rears are hard to find in good shape. It is a little tricky to get them apart to service the rears. Go to the WCC West Coast Cougar Classics web site and they show how to do it. http://www2.cougarpartscatalog.com/pancake.html?attribs=83

Scroll down the page and you will see the video.

The fronts are easy to take apart clean and lube.

It is not a difficult job but probably will take most of a weekend to do it. You will love the results. Maybe do the fronts on weekend and the rear another. Take pics and show the others how it goes.

I am only installing the front Power Windows and leaving the rears fixed.  So no need for pancake motors.

What is roughly the duration of a full open/close normally? Mine do like 2-3 secs, and seams be slowed down

by rubber contacts. going up goes bit slower. Is that normal or slow?

Need a little more help. Cleaned the regulator track and roller. lubed with Red and Tacky, put it abck together and adjusted the windows.

Passengers side goes down with a slow spot about half way down.

Drivers will not go all the way down, goes up all the way. Lower half of travel is very slow with a lot of drag or resisitance.

What do you think? Wires in the way, gummed up at the motor versus the window part of the regulator arm? Let me know.

I did NOT remove the motor nor the entire regulator on either side.

Thanks!!

You should take out the regulator and clean and lube it. The gear box on the motor also. With the regulator out you and move the window up and down to see if something else is binding the window and adjust the stops and guides. They do not fly up and down when new like today's windows do.
