Bought a set of rear axle bearings only to find they are too big.

The place of purchase did not mention spline count, only that they

should fit my car. They don't. Got another set that is smaller and

and fits. So what is the difference between 31 and 28 spline as far

as application goes? I am assuming 31 spline is a larger axle.

New problem.

While replacing the bearing we discovered the axle

is grooved so we need a new axle.

Have not been able to find a '71 axle 28 spline.

Any leads? All parts catalogs and online stores

only list to 1970.

Any junk yard. Car or truck. And as the pictures in Kevins' post show, it's pretty easy to spot the 28 spline.
The problem with dumpster diving is you are buying

someone else's problem. We had no idea the axle was

grooved until the bearing and retainer were removed.

My mechanic tells me we can have a new one on

Monday, made from scratch.
