Ok I know there's another thread about rust tech started..Marks 73 is doing his experiment but I'm going to show you mine which I started today..No fancy smancy over priced rust removers just PLAIN OLD VINEGAR..That's right plain old walmart vinegar..I started today & so far after 7 hours & some light scrubbing with a tooth brush heres the result..I'm going to let the parts sit for a week then post up the results..

Wow, are you kidding me? I never wouda thunk.

I'm moving the vinegar from the pantry to the garage! Nice post!

Doc
NO JOKE DOC !!!!:) I'm going to Costco to buy like 10 gallons & fill up a large flat style container to soak a bunch of my parts. You a need a container with a lid that you keep closed..I can't wait to see what the results are in a week !

I was going through some of my parts today & I forgot I had a bunch of old science & mechanics mags from the 40-50's So I start reading through a bunch & found an article about using vinegar for rust removal..OK game on time to try it ! IT WORKS BIG TIME !!!!!!

Wow Q, you better be careful letting your parts soak in vinegar for a week, there might not be anything left of your parts,,,,lol
lollerz

Nah it only eats the rust & some heavily rusted parts could take longer than a week...It takes so long because it's so mild..Think about it you put vinegar in your food !

I keep thinking about how cool it would be to fill up a swimming pool with vinegar and drop mine in there. Problem is, the only things that would be left would be the glass and plastic interior pieces. :D :D :D

Neat trick, Scott. I might give it a go with some of my small parts I plan on re-using.

Yep the vinegar WORKS.... in fact I need to do a few items. That gear is amazing though.

Okay so here is MY offer....not car related but do this. Stop buying all that weed control for your yard. 1 gal of vinegar in a sprayer with a cap full of orange oil. SPOT treat the weeds DONT broadcast (it will kill grass too).... DEAD weeds especially if the temp is over 80 degrees.

OK, OK, I know that this may be ( and probably is...) a pretty dumb question.....I know what vinegar is...but, what is orange oil??

Rust mort is a rust remover I used on my car. it's mainly phosphoric acid, so it makes sense that vinegar would work. Maybe you could find some good old boys who could distill the vinegar then it wouldn't have to soak a week.

here in Canada vinegar is easy to find it always comes with french fries!!

Ok so here's an update on my toploader input shaft I left in the vinegar bath for a 1 week..Took all the rust off for sure but turned the metal a black color..No biggie but I'm thinking the best way is to keep an eye on the part & only soak as long as it takes to remove the rust.

Wow, turned out great!

Did you find any dead fruit flies in the Vinegar? Whenever we find them in the kitchen we set out a small bowl of Vinegar and the fruit flies fly in and die.
