didn't I post something about vinegar in an other post. I have been using it to remove rust from old railroad spikes that I use to make knives with my coal forge. Can't use it in this house cause the neighbors are to close. I would need to get a smoke eater.

Yeah vinegar works like magic. It will also turn chicken bones to rubber hahaha:D

Niiiiice! Gonna have to give this a try on some rusted parts this weekend. Thanks, Q! :)

What do you use to get the vinegar off the parts? Then what is used before applying the Rust bullet?

Meaning do I do the vinegar treatment, rinse with whatever (spi wax & degreaser maybe?), then paint the bare metal with Rust Bullet?

Thanks.

Vinegar is an acid (actually acetic acid, along with a few others) As such is needs to be neutralized in some manner. bases such as soap work well as does backing soda. Unfortunately, what most people don't remember is when an acid is neutralized by combining it with a base, the resultant reaction gives off a salt. The salt is likewise a corrosive agent that will foster future rust if not removed.

If you use vinegar, wash the part off with soapy water then wash the part off with clean water then dry the part thoroughly and provide whatever rust preventative you intend to use (primer or paint, or oil for internal engine parts.

Vinegar will make brass brittle, so be careful if using it around synchros or anything else with brass or copper .
