So I'm selling a 70 cougar convertible I bought in the fall. Its a really nice driver car. Original engine 351 4 V (m code) automatic, white with white/black interior. It needs a top.

I have to do a few things to get it road worthy as its been sitting for a couple years inside.

Can't decide if should have a new top put on it. The one that is on it has some marks and is functional but I wouldn't trust it in a rain storm. Back plastic is shot and someone unzipped it and zipper broke.

Wondering if I should put a new top on it or let the next owner put a top of their liking (color, type) on it.

Whats your opinion?

It really depend on the condition of the top and the car. You said it would not hold up in a rain storm. If that the only major issue with the car I would replace it. It really depend on much you want for the car and the condition its in. I think it would sell faster with a new top and it would be one less item for the next owner to deal with.

Comes down to what you are hoping to get for the car. If you are trying to make big money then it should look the part. Some prefer to see it in its original patina. If your price is fair it will sell.

The fact you are selling it should make you think about the return on investment for the cost of the new top.

The top is a big issue to a lot of purchasers who want to see it in good shape, just in stills confidence in the rest of the car...

It comes down to the asking price vs. The condition of the car. Good luck.

Was leaning towards having the top done. Then second guessing myself thinking if i do a black top, which it originally had based on the marti report, someone will want white.

Hopefully get around 10-13k for it. Have to finish up flushing the brake system and replacing the leaky trans pan gasket and a few other things then I'll probably throw it on ebay.

It's a great looking car. I'll post some pics once I get it all cleaned up. Once spring decides to stay in Central New York!
