1972 Ford Mustang Hardtop
Hello, so I've been slowly working on my 1972 Mustang Hardtop and having issues with slipping of the gears. When I put it in park and let it **** for a second it shifts and clicks. Then I give it a little gas and it revs the engine and I stop then it catch's when I give it a little gas and moves. Does it once in awhile. I already filled the fluid up and it works alot better and my next step would be to change the transmission filter pan and all that stuff with a kit and then test it again. I am hoping it's just worn seals and needs the fluids flushed and not gear or bands needing replacing. Also any brick and motar stores that usualy have then or online stores for getting all the parts that correctly fits?

Also main question am I on the right track for this type of fix?

When you say it moves, do you mean the car? Forward or backwards?

I am sure you will get answers from more experience members, but you may want to check that you dont have too much slop at the shifter. If the shifter bushings are worn out or not existant the shifter may allow movement and it may allow the trans to come out of gear or Park. There is also room for adjustment at the link between the shifter and the rod that goes to the trans.

I just replaced theae bushings with a Scott Drake pair. It is an easy job and the shifter moves with no slop.

Your symptoms are consistent with a low fluid level or lack of pressure. Changing fluid and filter is the logical first step. You'll also have to find out why your level was so low.

Check the fluid level with the engine running and the transmission in park. When the transmission is cold the correct level is at the bottom of the acceptable range on the dipstick.

 
Check for leaks while the car is running. Drive around to get everything warmed up then park and let run. Climb under the car. Not sure what trans you have but I can speak on an FMX and say the common places for leaks on those are the Pan gasket and the modulator. A good way to determine if it is fresh leaking is to spray a little carb cleaner up there and clean off any residue and evidence of the leaks then drive to warm up and recheck. Another spot I have seen leak, but not as common as the other two are the trans cooler lines. Follow them from the trans all the way up to the cooler and inspect as well. The fluid has to have gone somewhere.

 
Update. It's a c4 and not a fmx transmission but a 14 pan hole transmission. Bought the wrong one and had fun calling places and trying to explain what I was looking for or had. Transmission through me off with the c6, c4 fmx, c4 I guess. Anyways I replace the gasket and filter for the transmission fluid and now that part is running smooth as ever. Onto the next noticeable issue, something leaking from both tailpipes. I am go to check if it's water or oil and then go from there.

 
If you do not run your car for long periods of time to get it plenty hot especially with dual exhaust there will be water in the tail pipes on occasion as it is the vapor particles in the exhaust turning to liquid form.

 
I have a small leak on I believe the rod linkage has an O-ring that needs to be replaced and the bar itself is loose. I found a picture and pretty sure the correct part number (7326) for what I am looking at but not 100% sure because all the diagrams I've been looking at don't show it exactly but close to it. So next to the oil pan I see on the driver's side a linkage setup that's got a bar that goes from right next to the transmission drain pan up next to the filter in the top partin the engineer bay. I found a picture of the end I am looking at and it's the correct end just not sure if it's the correct bar.

When I shift into gears it's the connection that moves on the driver side of the transmission drain pan.
