What is the proper air cleaner assembly?

My '73 Mach 1 with a Q code 351 & C6 has always had a open element cheap air cleaner since I've bought it. I always thought the proper air cleaner had an auxiliary air valve in the side of it with a chrome lid. Now I'm not sure. Looking at a lot of pics of '73 cars it just looks like a large all blue air cleaner and snorkel with no additional air intake valve. So what should it be? My build date is late April of '73.

Mine is just a large blue one with no air valve.
