I get so sick of heaing "just squirt some paint on it and call it good"

Yes it's Monday and I am a bear today...lol...but seriously if people want a crap job why are they in my shop? They see my work, they know me and what I stand for, so don't drag in panels with dings and expect me to "just squirt it" and put it on a car that your taking to a show and tell everyone that I did it. It's not my fault you did not get it to me in time. Sorry guys just venting when I should be working. Hope I get to see some 71-73s in Branson this weekend. I will post pics when I get back.

Some people dont get how it hurts a painters rep to paint peices or crap...i got a freind who paints nothing but high dollar cars.....Has his own paint shop and vented paint booth....And charges alot of money...But when you get your car..You get your money's worth....It smooth as a babies bottom....I was there one day and he was working on a 1930's dodge...He said go ahead and touch that unpainted fender..i rubbed it...It was smooth as glass...he worked that metal till it was perfict...Better than factory..lol

I have a 48 F1 in metalock here now that the guy said "hell I would take it just like that".

And I have told some people to take it to maaco before...lol.

I wonder if the same people would tell a carpenter who was building their house to "just throw some shingles on the floor and call it good"?

While I hafta be honest that even a Maaco job would look good on my pile right now, I also must say that I have tremendous respect for those in the biz of working sheet metal and making it shiny - they are no less than artists in my book. I've done some minor body work and I'm proud of the job I did on my Jeep, but it was a 'small' job and didn't require a lot of skill. But a total rehab of my '71 - nah... I'll leave that to a pro. I think I could get OK results... but I want better than OK. Some things are just better left to experts - even if it's gonna sting the ol' wallet, because some things are just worth it.

A guy wanted me to paint his 68 coupe but when I told him the price and time frame he said that maaco would do it for $600 and walked off. About a month later he showed up and wanted me to fix all their mistakes. I have never seen such a mess, dents still there, dirt in the paint, orange peel, globs of paint, runs in the clear, and flake stripes. I walked around the car, looked at him, smiled, and walked off shaking my head. He got exactly what he paid for and I refuse to have my name associated with a crappy job.

Hey now, there are some good ones around as they are independent franchises. A Maaco in california did my 70 Camaro and no one would know it was from there. They did a fine job, but it cost 7K. The quality I got would easily be confused with something that costs around 20K to do in Australia.

The most important step they did in making it look really good is the wet sand and polish after paint. That was about 8 years ago now and it still looks great with a few chips from driving.

I totaly agree, it all depends on who ownes the franchises, I had my car painted by my Local Macco, I did all of the body work and prep work, when I took it to him, the only thing I really wanted was NO OVERSPRAY!!!, he said he will bring in someone else to paint the car.

I looks Great when I picked it up, and no overspray like I asked

at car shows, when the question comes up and I tell them they don't beleave me.

the previus paint that was on the car was also from the same Macco, I had it done about 10 years ago when I bought the car, it still had a shine, I just needed to fix some old hacked body work someone did before I got it.

The key word there was $600 for the job...if you want cheap they will do it, I won't. I have seen maaco do some quality jobs but they were not cheap.

I would have loved to have found you when |I started my restoration! The shop I went to originally did the opposite, talked me into more then a scuff and paint but never started the work! Took the money for materials and never did a thing to my car. The good thing was I ended up doing 75% of the work myself. I then took it to a local shop in the same town I live in and they did a fantastic job painting the car! Local shop small town REPUTATION! The moral is if you find an honest shop take their advice! It will save you money in the long run. Don't cheap it out! Do your research ask for references,visit the shop,and most important talk to employee's a happy employee who is getting paid works better than one who is not! Do it right the first time. Oh and I never did get my deposit back.
