I had one where if the dipstick did NOT read overfull, I experienced engagement problems. I'm not sure if the fill tube got switched or the dipstick as I had swapped transmissions, but that was what I ended up with. I was certain I used the same parts though!

there are 4 seals on the main shaft,.. input or output, can remember exactly which one,.. those are the culprit.. probably hard when they are cold, but once they warm up ,they get soft again and they seal again..
