Steering Wheel Club

Back in the 80's, I used The Steering Wheel "Club" on my cars. Is this still a good theft deterrent option for my 72? I am close to getting it back from restoration.

I don't see them used very much when we are out at shows where you leave your car out say for the weekend. Most seen to hide a kill switch somewhere if they are really worried. But that being said any deterrent is better than no deterrent. Most of the 2-3 day shows that I go to have security at night so I feel safer leaving my car there than at the hotel. Can you even buy A "Club" still?

Clubs are easily defeated with bolt cutters. Cut the wheel, bend it until the club comes off and bend it back.

I agree any deterrent is better than none. Most thieves don't want to work for it, they look for the easy mark. Any and all alarm systems or locks can be beat. When I managed a dealership the alarm company we used was owned by a former car thief who served three years and decided to go into theft deterrent when he got out. It was a great sales pitch with customer that he knew what worked and what didn't. He would always say you can't stop thieves, you just want to make it inconvenient enough for them that they move on to the next car that they can get faster and easier.

Got one in my garage that I never use.

My truck is high up on the frequent theft list....I use the club for the deterrent aspect. I know it can be defeated, but it's better than nothing. As has been stated, make the other cars more attractive.

In college, I had a 1970 bronco, bikini-top, with a 3 speed. I used a lock that hooked from the steering wheel under the brake pedal....was in a hurry one day, leaving K-Mart, jumped in, threw it in reverse, backed up, hit the brakes and realized the lock was still in place and I was about to hit the car behind me. Threw it into 1st to stop it, but the engine didn't die and now I'm about to hit the car in front....threw it into reverse again and turned the key off to finally end the debacle.

A long time ago, a friend with a muscle car and little money made his own anti theft device. He took both ends off an old coil wire and used a black piece of vacuum line as the "new coil wire". Reinstalled both old ends to create a fake hollow coil wire. Looked real but a car would never start with it

In case you haven't seen it recently

A manual transmission probably rules out about 80% + of thieves. That said I do use a club. I know it's easily defeated but figure it'll at least slow someone down. Also have a fuel cut off and a cheap GPS tracker. All that and they'll usually just end up on a flatbed.
