Motor Mount Rubber Question

I am cleaning up my 71 convertible motor mount insulators and have a few questions.

1. It looks like there should be a layer of rubber molded into the top of the insulators but mine appear to be gone (see pic). Is that correct?

2. If there should be a rubber layer, can I add the rubber coating back on or is it not posaible?

3. If I can add the rubber coating, what can be used for the rubber material and how thick should it be? Maybe use a spray on rubberized coating?

The rubber that you have to worry about is between the two brackets. You'll need to inspect it for deterioration and delamination. The rubber that you show in your picture is just flash from the manufacturing process and has nothing to do with the performance of the mount.

Thanks Don. I took some pics of the other side of my motor mounts and posted them below. It appears to me that I still have enough rubber remaining but wanted to check with the forum.

Can anyone verify these mounts are in good enough shape to reuse?

We need to see the rubber that is between the two metal pieces. What you are showing on the surface has no effect on the motor mount function. The rubber between the metal bracket is what deteriorates and separates from the metal surfaces. Even then pictures may not be enough, you need to probe the rubber to see how it responds.

Those cracks show that delamination has started, you need to probe them with a small flat blade screwdriver to determine the extent. In any case, it looks like time to replace them.
