A couple things I was curious about.

First thing I want to say you are for sure doing the right thing going on frame machine first thing. I see so many start on a car and nothing fits because they did not start with a square, level platform.

Second. Why do you think air shocks tore up the rear? I bought a 73 new and maybe two weeks after I got it I put helper springs around the rear shocks because it sat so low in rear. It would not handle either had to shift some weight to front and stiffen the rear.

I have a couple verts with air shocks and nothing has ever happened looks fine.

The last thing. Was this car sold on craigslist back in the spring? I was looking at one somewhere in the west maybe Colorado with 429 but went with a 72 CJ vert and two 73 H code verts instead.

Will watch your build for sure. When you lay one of these out every piece off you have to have lots of room. Also going back together lots of bubble wrapped parts. My house is full, lol.

Great way to start a build.

Great thread, thanks for sharing. Looking forward to seeing the progress. You're doing a proper job!

I want my diff and underside to look this good too, I will get there!

The work has started on the car, the old tail light panel was removed and I purchased an NOS replacement. Of note, there is some differences on the replacement (a D3Z #) from the original '71 panel that was on the car. Will require a piece to be cut out of the old panel and welded into the new panel to keep the panel similar to the original. Sad... It cost me $750 (Cdn) for the replacement and it would appear that Ford changed the panel over the three year run of the car... There are some other minor differences also, won't get into that here. I have decided to change (alter) the new panel to match what was on the vert. originally in 1971.

Also, the hit to the passenger side rear trunk pan area has been corrected on the frame machine. Fortunately, no frame (uni-body damage), the hit basically pushed the trunk pan forward at the bracket about 3". Caught a big break on this one... The trunk pan damage caused by long term air shock usage will be welded up also. I wanted to save the original trunk pan if possible and it now looks like this will occur.

Once the rear panel is finished, the battery apron will be replaced with an NOS piece at which point the car can then be put on the rotisserie and sent out for blasting. Will update again next week. Cheers.
Ok I understand more on the air shocks. Must have been run hard and put up wet for sure.

Do you have some pictures of the differences in the tail light panel that is of interest to me since I have 72 & 73 cars. The rear bumper was changed for 73 to allow a little more room before it hit the sheet metal, rubber filler on each side in front of bumper. No rubber filler part on 71 / 72. Does that look like what the change was?

Yes the license plate area on the 73 panel is different than the 71-72 the license plate mount on the lower panel and the panel itself is also different. I think on the Ford service part they did not have the one with the holes for the rear trim and honeycomb because it was not on all cars. They always make a service part that will work for all to reduce the number of parts in the warehouse. They put the work of putting the holes in on the shop.

Too bad you didn't have time to find someone with a 71-72 panel that wanted to swap. I am sure the 73 panel is more difficult to find in NOS.

Looks good. I also had the same problem with the battery support. I was fortunate enough to find one in very good shape out of the mustang sibling cougar. West Coast Cougar has helped me out with alot of good salvage original parts. I know that they have recently been selling out and scraping their salvage yard.
