71 steering column shaft removal

Is there a trick or something I'm missing to remove the steering shaft on my non tilt column?
I have the column out of the car, and the large nut up top has been removed, but I thought at
this point it would just slide out from the bottom, but it wont budge.

Are you talking about the part that bolts to the rag joint? If so, it just pulls out as it is a shaft that fits inside another shaft.
