neutral safety switch

Do you have to have the neutral safety switch for your car to operate? when i got my 73 mach 1 its was completely torn down everything in boxes. i noticed the only way to get power to the key to turn motor over is they have a single red wire pluged into the headlight harness where the neutral safety switch plugs in and it goes to the cyliniod. is there any other way to get power ?

The best way is to do it correctly, there's a reason it's named the way it is. You don't want it starting in gear and running over someone or going through the back of your garage. It also provides the switch for the backup light.

Do u know where I could get one at? How can I figure out what kind my transmission is cause I know that matters?

Does your shifter bucket have a neutral safety switch in it? If so, its an FMX transmission car. If it only has the indicator light in the shifter, it's a C6 transmission car.

So I just took it apart it's a c-6. Thanks racerX!!

And someone cut the harness right at the shifter bucket!!
