With my recent transmission problems i decided the best course of action was to find a C-6 Master rebuild kit.

in researching c-6 Master Kits Scott drake C8ZZ-7005-MK and 7ZZ-7005-MK come up.

on the surface they seem like good kits.

The first place i ordered from stated they had the kit in stock. I ordered it only to find out it was back ordered. I cancelled that first order and went with a second distributor. about a week later C8ZZ-7005-MK showed up.

the box was nice seemed to have all the seals and ring seals and the clutch packs steels etc. the box presented well and it took me 2 more weeks before i started to get into the box.

Problem #1 there is Zero literature with the kit, there is no parts manifest for you to compare against to. Nothing is labeled or marked at all.

Some paper work included with the kit was advertizing for stuff not even included with the kit. recommended kits that you could purchase in addition to this one.

Problem #2 whom ever designed this kit did not make it specific for 1968-1973 transmissions they just tossed in what ever was labeled for a C-6 and called it done. There are seals not even designed for a C-6 included with the kit. there are seals from different year C-6 transmissions that you will never used. So if you try and follow along with replacement seals you are left with tons of extra seals which question your sanity as to whether or not you even got the right seal to begin with. Many of the seals are similar and nothing is marked so you take your best guess with this kit and pray to god you guessed correctly.

Problem #3 The clutch packs inside the kit for the Forward clutch is not correct for pre 1976 transmissions. Somebody has seemed to mix up what clutches go to which transmission. they gave basically double the reverse high clutch packs and then another set of the same packs but with different colored teeth. Even worse none of it appears to be good.

The packs appear to be the wrong thickness so my reverse high clutch is Barely in spec when completed, and i cannot even assemble the forward clutch because the kit supplied the wrong type of clutches.

the low reverse clutches supplied with the kit were the only ones that appeared correct during assembly.

So you basically paid good money for a trusted kit from a known restoration company specific for year and you ended up with a non-specific year rebuild kit with questionable/incorrect parts.

nothing has been missing from this kit as far as i can tell but it is a kit more destined as a late 1980s rebuild kit for C-6 transmissions.

I now have to figure out where to find these clutch packs and set my progress back weeks.

there are more expensive general C-6 master kits that might be worth going after but this kit from scott drake C8ZZ-7005-MK i do not recommend.

.

you can buy different thickness steels/shims to get the clearance correct . . this is standard practice, nothing unusual at all.

i would set the 3rd gear 5 disc clutch on the tight side like a maximum of .060" or slightly less like .055" . . this will also firm up the shifts and increase disc life . . this allows you to use a quick release servo without it causing flare.

also, it is a very bad idea to buy a kit that does not list the brand of plates it uses . . this can be a sign that the plates may be crap and having a trans chatter or burn out after 20,000 miles and having to rebuild it again is no fun.

the best plates for a stock or mild build are borg warners . . kits can be bought from several places including ebay.

heres a borg warner kit for only $140.00 but it does not say who makes the band . . a borg warner band is only around $18.00.

heres the borg warner band . . $15.00

the discs are a little farther down this page and includes plate thickness

http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=2&Category_Code=C-6

the E lever, is the most commonly used for performance street builds.

the H servo has a high apply force and quicker release than an r servo . . the pistons are available new but you need a used cover.

H 2.34 3.02 O-rings . . . . . . . . . 77.48%

R 2.48 3.50 O-rings . . . . . . . . . 70.85%

heres three parts suppliers

how do you feel about Alto Red clutches?

also the specs with these clutches in the drake kit were totally out of wack to the point i didn't want to use them. the brand for everything which was incomplete and incorrect was raybestos.

i have used borg warner with standard steels and red altos with kolene steels several times in mild to moderate builds with no prob.

the borg warners will take a bit of abuse . . red altos are a bit of overkill for moderate builds.

i would not use the base model raybestos discs . . the blue raybestos discs are their good ones . . the discount link i gave you doesn't even sell them, lol.

i dont run the band tighter than 1 1/4 turn out . any less might cause drag and premature failure.

where do you get the different sized steels or the ring clips to set the end play?

i may need some kind of assortment to figure things out.

i don't plan to add more clutches so i will be using the stock which is 4 clutches and 3 in the forward clutch. at this point i don't want to start getting into packing 5 clutches and mixing early and late model parts etc.

at this point i'm ditching the raybestos kit.

before i posted i went for a stage 2 alto red eagle complete kit that came with a wider 2nd gear band, so i will see how that is when i shows up, i can always order the borg/warner kit you linked to.

lol, thats overkill but a nice set up . . i use the wide band on fmx trannies . . i believe you need a wider drum or at least a new drum with the wider band . . the wider drum may require more discs, i dont remember.

the links i gave you should have the other parts you requested.

in case they dont tell you, soak the plates and band in tranny oil for 30 minutes first.

soaking the bands and clutches , yup i have been :)

the band i got is suppose to be 2 1/2" and stock is 2 1/8" i guess i will see if it even fits it not i'll get a stock band.

maybe the kit will have some instructions about using it, one can hope.

thanks for the help and the links.

I went ahead and ordered some snap rings from makco just in case.

well, even if it does fit, it mist be flawlessly smooth to run a wide band.
