Hello Mustang owners near and far.

If you have or know someone who owns a 1971 CJ / SCJ / Drag Pack car that is missing its original engine, then I may have it.

I have had this motor for several years now. Std. bore, thick web D0VE-A, four bolt main, D0OE rods, D0OE-R heads, oil pan and other main parts.

Here is a picture of the VIN stamping on the left hand rear cylinder bank.

I am also looking for a similar block out of an early 1970 Cyclone. That block will carry the VIN 0H522268.

PM me if you have a lead.

NOTE: I neither want nor need to sell the Cobra Jet, unless it is to the owner of the car.

Happy trails all

Here are my six 429 VINS: Just missing one.

1F05C106367 - Not original Block

It would be cool to reunite the car with it's original engine...Btw, welcome to the forum

Thanks Mike:

Keep the number on tab. I intend to restore / blueprint this engine. I will keep it as long as I own the car. I have two other CJ engines to choose from, including the ´70 SCJ that is in it now.

Not try to steal this thread, but hey mike maybe you remember a few years ago I got driver side front fender from you, after my tire blow and did my fender in. Just like to let you know I got the 72 back on the road this pass summer, and enjoy driving it to shows plus retirerment now. Still talk about you showing me around that night, and hope to run in to you again sometime. Rich

Putting this here for the search engines to crawl it; perhaps the owner of the car may find the thread this way.

I tried to post this on the Mustang - Cougar megasite, but was not successful. Motor is going nowhere in the meantime.

Good job Kurt. I was fortunate enough to locate and purchase the original block for my Boss 351. I don't think I will ever build it but nice to have if/when I ever decide to sell.

Rich, Nice to hear from you again and to see you enjoying the Mustang!!!

I was suppose to be at Carlisle in June for the Mustang celebration (they asked if I would bring my 64.5 Indy Pace Car for display), but our exchange student is graduating that weekend. Sooner or later, we will catch up again! Mike

Do you want me to get in touch with John Blair, the administrator? He is a friend of mine?

Not to mention that it could be one of the 42:

1F03C181198 (34)

1F03J181198 (8)

We're already in Google for the previous VIN's too. A 429 seeker will spot this. With any luck, the car will show up too.

Hi:

Since i have this engine in my shop, I think I will spend the few dollars needed to obtain a Marti repot on the car. When I have it, I will share it with y´all. It might be interesting.

After all … how many Cobra Jet / SCJ engines were installed in 1971 Mustangs?

Well, it's a one-of-8 VIN number chance. One of them has to be it.

After all … how many Cobra Jet / SCJ engines were installed in 1971 Mustangs?
1971 C-codes w/4-speeds: 11 hardtops, 118 fastbacks, 1 convertible. (Total: 130)

1971 C-codes w/C6 automatics: 22 hardtops, 192 fastbacks, 9 convertibles. (Total: 223)

1971 J-codes w/4-speeds: 15 hardtops, 594 fastbacks, 9 convertibles. (Total: 618)

1971 J-codes w/C6 automatics: 38 hardtops, 833 fastbacks, 23 convertibles. (Total: 894)

(Data is from Mustang...By the Numbers - if you don't already have a copy, get one)

1,865 cars. That's not chicken feed, seeing as 429 cars are often treated as unobtanium - and who would have thought that J-codes are the most common of the breed throughout all body styles?

Four of the coupes appear to be accounted for (in pictures, on the internet, that is) - craziest thing is that of the J code coupes appears to be a Grande, if the image name is correct:

Thanks guys. Not what I expected, but a very positive response. The 385 is one of the greatest engines built. Why? Everything about it makes sense, as far as serviceability is concerned. Working on it is a great pleasure. Very few problems.

How's this for a sleeper - it's a 429 Fastback, 4 speed, Magnums and that was the only other option - 48,000 original miles.

Not to mention that you got it for a pretty good deal, as I recall. Looks as if they ticked the NACA and Ram Air boxes too.

The Magnums give it away though - ditto for the coupe. With base trim rings and caps, nobody would be the wiser.
