72 351 2v Mach 1 project just purchased
Hi I have a 351 2v mach1 that has a very leaky Fmx gearbox or torque converter

I am going to remove it and have it reconditioned which will cost in the uk£1350.00

Is the Fmx gearbox good or should I upgrade to c4

They say they can tighten up the bands and add a kit to it that helps the gear Change

What do you think

The FMX is a decent trans

If the shop can fix it right you should be OK

Keep in mind if you change to a C4 you will need to change

many other parts to.

drive shaft

cross member

shifter linkage

lock out rod

If the transmission shop is going to recondition the transmission, the bands should be replaced, not just tightened up. Not familiar with what shops charge for rebuilding in UK, but the price they are charging you would accommodate a full overhaul here in the US.

Mine had the FMX before I swapped it for an AOD.

It's the mod I regret the most. The FMX worked beautifully and is very sturdy especially with a 302.

I loved it. I have even considered trashing the AOD and going back to the FMX but the current setup has cost so much that it would be financially disastrous to go back to the FMX.

Keep it, have it refurbished and enjoy years of trouble free use.

Have them install new bands even if the old ones are still good enough to be tightened. As they will be tearing the trans apart it's only a small step to do it at the same time.
