I remember my mother cussing because the gas station she drove out of her way to get to had raised its price from 29 cents the previous day to 32 cents. She thought that it must be illegal somehow, and threatened to sue the owner. Of course, this was back when there was no such thing as "self service" gas. And high octane gas was called "Ethel" (anyone know the story behind that?) This was sometime in the mid- to late- sixties in Oklahoma City, OK. And cigarettes were 29 cents a pack for regulars, and 32 cents for 100s. I know this because I frequently went down to the local supermarket to buy them for her or my dad. Occasionally, a clerk would question me and I'd have to run home to get a note from one or the other to verify that the purchase was for them.
When I started driving in 1975, I think gas was a little over $1 a gallon at the Air Force Base (Edwards, CA) that my mother was employed at.
Showing my age, for sure.
