You probably remember seeing this a week or so ago on all of our feeds:

Screen-shot-2012-02-09-at-4.04.07-PM.png

It caused a bit of a commotion. It left many of our customers quite curious and we received more than a few questions as to what we were up to.

We kept promising something very cool.

And now it’s time to unveil the first part of Gotta Have Builds.

We just ordered two brand-new 2013 Mustangs!

mustang1024x768.jpg

Both are Gotta Have It Green.

Both are GTs.

Both include the 5.0L Coyote V8, along with all of the other awesome new features we talked about when the 2013 Mustang was unveiled.

While these cars will start out similar, both will serve very different roles for CJ Pony Parts and will be set apart by their very different options and their very catchy names:

Coming up soon, we’ll be giving you a glimpse of what we expect them to look like when they’re done!

We have lots of HUGE plans for both of these cars and we’ll be updating you regularly on our progress. We’ll be posting every update right here on the Mustang Parts blog. However, if you gotta have more Gotta Have Builds, visit the dedicated website: Gotta Have Builds - Ford Mustang Project Builds from CJ Pony Parts!.

However, we invite you to toss in your two cents. What do you think we should be doing to our two new Mustangs? What do these cars gotta have?

Update as of 2/17/2012:

[video=youtube]

After our big announcement on Monday, it’s only fitting that this week’s video of the week showcases our upcoming Gotta Have Builds! The cars in the video are only mockups and are one of many possibilities of what Gotta Have It Race and Gotta Have It Street might end up looking like.

Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of design tools out there yet for the 2013 Mustangs, so we had to base our mockups on the 2010 GT500 model. They aren’t exactly the same, but are definitely very close! In fact, to make these designs and this awesome video happen, we found out that the video game Forza 4 was an easy tool to use. One of our designers spent many hours on Forza 4 to create these possible designs for our Gotta Have Builds cars and today’s video.

Are you already a Forza 4 gamer on the Xbox 360? Starting today, you can download either of these two in-game designs for FREE! Just go to the Storefront in Forza 4, then Buy Designs (don’t worry, it’s still free) and search for the Manual Keyword Gotta Have Builds.

So, take a look and let us know your thoughts on these possible designs.

Update as of 2/29/2012

While we’re waiting for our Gotta Have Builds 2013 Mustang GTs to hit the assembly line at the Ford Mustang plant, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to share some of our plans for the cars, and let you know where we want to visit with them, so you can make plans to come check them out for yourself!

This week, our focus is on the
Gotta Have It Race Mustang!

CJ Pony Service is going to be working hard on Gotta Have It Race to reach their goal of having the fastest naturally aspirated 5.0 Mustangs on the drag strip!

To start, we’ll be hitting the dyno at In Tune Autoworks, our go-to dyno shop for over a year, just down the road from CJ’s. In Tune Autoworks will be using a Mustang Dyno during testing, which is known to record power readings 10-15% lower than a Dynojet.

Once our baseline dyno is done, Gotta Have It Race will be heading down to the drag strip at Cecil County Dragway, where Bill Tumas, our CJ Pony Service Manager, runs his personal Mustangs. We are hoping the car is built and delivered to CJ’s before April 21st, so it can be entered in the JLP Shootout at the Cecil County Dragway. That event will allow us to get a good baseline for the car and see what our future competition will be like.

After our baseline runs at the JLP Shootout, we plan to enter the Super Stang class at the MIR NMRA event in Maryland on May 4-6th, and the Fun Ford Weekend at the Maple Grove Raceway on August 17-18. We’re also considering a number of other events that are within a 3-4 hour range of CJ’s and have a good class for our Gotta Have It Race to enter. You might also see us in the CJ Pony Parts – Rally Dixie 2012 in June or on The Hot Rod Power Tour.

In terms of drag times, our first goal is to break the stock intake to pan record, which currently stands at 11.37@118 (and was achieved with an automatic Mustang). Once that’s been beaten, we’re gunning for the current stock longblock naturally aspirated record of 11.02@122, which was achieved on a 6-speed Mustang, like Gotta Have It Race. Both of those records are current as posted on the S197 Forum.

Will you be coming out to see Gotta Have It Race at the track, or do you think your Mustang has what it takes to beat it?

Take our poll below and let us know what you think our best stock time will be the first time out!

A Closer Look at Gotta Have It Street!

gottahaveitstreetprevie.jpg

As we mentioned in last week’s closer look at Gotta Have It Race, we are going to follow up this week with a closer look at Gotta Have It Street!

Gotta Have It Street is going to blow your mind!

We’re envisioning a head turning, jaw dropping Mustang that performs as good as it looks.

Gotta Have It Street is going to be getting tons of awesome parts–the same ones you’re buying for your Mustang! Our goal with Gotta Have it Street is to have a Mustang that not only goes fast, but also provides that extra ‘flash’ you need at car shows. Here’s a few of the upgrades we are thinking about working on first:

  • Lowering the car and putting it on some big, aggressive wheels and tires
  • A nice, loud exhaust
  • A rear spoiler
  • A new grille
  • A SCT X3 Power Flash Computer Programmer
  • An intake
  • Interior upgrades

We plan for Gotta Have It Street to be busy traveling over the next few months! You’ll definitely see the car at the All-Ford Nationals in Carlisle and at Mustang Week in Myrtle Beach, plus we have plans to visit several local car shows, cruises and autocross events. Both Gotta Have it Street and Gotta Have It Race will also be traveling to the MIR NMRA event in Maryland and Fun Ford Weekends. You might even see Gotta Have it Street at an open track event or two at Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia or the Pocono Raceway. You gotta come see it this summer!

We’re getting closer and closer to Ford building our Gotta Have It Race and Gotta Have It Street. We’re expecting our VINs any day now, and you’ll be the first to know when we get them. Meanwhile, our excitement builds every day, especially when we see pictures like this–do you see one of our Gotta Have Builds?

Get Ready! Gotta Have It Street is Almost Here!

We’ve been getting excited about our Gotta Have Builds Mustangs for the last two months, ever since we placed the orders. Since then, we’ve showed off our proposed designs for both cars, we’ve taken a closer look at Gotta Have It Race and Gotta Have It Street, and even invited you to guess when the first car is going to arrive at CJ’s.

Our dealership, Hoffman Ford of Harrisburg, PA.

Well, the wait is almost over! We’ve received word from our friends at Hoffman Ford in Harrisburg that Gotta Have It Street is estimated to arrive THIS SATURDAY, April 14!

With the latest arrival estimation for the upcoming weekend, you’ll want to keep an eye on CJ Pony Parts’ pages on Facebook, Google Plus, and Twitter. The delivery–with pictures–will be posted there, with a full update coming on our blog early next week, including a photo shoot!

Once Gotta Have It Street arrives, we’re getting right down to work. We have quite a few parts ready for installation, with more arriving soon. Here are a few of the vendors who have already provided parts for Gotta Have It Street:

If you entered our recently ended Guess the Arrival Date contest, our April 14th date announcement is only an estimation provided by Ford Motor Company and our local dealership. The winner of our contest will be determined based on the day in which Gotta Have Street is actually delivered to CJ Pony Parts, but we are really hoping that this coming Saturday is the real deal!

Sorry for the delay in updates but it's been crazy around here with Carlisle being here last week and not having time to get this post up. Here is the current update from last Wednesday.

Our Gotta Have Builds cars have been busy this past week, getting some new modifications and then visiting Cecil County Dragway!

Our new JLT Cold Air Intake in Gotta Have It Green!

Last week, we started our first round of power mods to Gotta Have It Race and Gotta Have It Street. We installed two cold air intakes from JLT, one in Carbon Fiber and one that is painted Gotta Have It Green. We also installed two XCAL3 tuners from SCT. We loaded each SCT XCAL3 with base 93 octane tunes and with 93 octane tunes for a JLT Cold Air intake. The JLT Cold Air Intake installations were a breeze and took practically no time. Our install video for these JLT Cold Air Intakes will be coming soon to CJ’s YouTube channel!

Next, we installed both of the XCAL3s and loaded the 93 octane JLT Cold Air tunes into both cars. Unfortunately, neither tune was perfect, and we definitely did not want to race either car until those tunes were perfected. So, the day after we loaded the tunes, we gave Jay from JLT a call, and he got us on the right track with a great 93 octane JLT cold air tune for our manual transmission Gotta Have It Race. Thanks for the help Jay! Since we were not able to get the automatic transmission 93 octane JLT Cold Air tune perfected for Gotta Have It Street, we decided to remove the intake and load a base 93 octane tune in Gotta Have It Street for our trip to the track on Saturday.

Bright and early on Saturday morning, Rich, Rick and Steve loaded up both sets of Race Star Industries Dark Star wheels with drag radials, some tools and a tent into Rich’s 2012 Ford Raptor and started the 1-1/2 hour trip down to Cecil County Dragway with Gotta Have It Race and Gotta Have It Street. We arrived at the track around 9:30 a.m. and proceeded to unload the truck and setup our pit area. We also met up with our good buddy Brent and his 2011 5.0L Race Red GT. Once we were setup, we put our 17″x4.5 Race Star Industries Dark Star wheels with 185/55-17 M&H Racemaster Front Runners on each car. Gotta Have It Race was prepped with 15″x10″ Dark Star wheels with 275/50-15 Mickey Thompson ET Streets, which fit perfectly because we used BMR’s Rear Sway Bar Relocation Kit. Gotta Have It Street was prepped with 17″x9.5″ Dark Star wheels with 275/40-17 BF Goodrich drag radials.

The last time we had Gotta Have It Race to the drag strip was on May 12th at Cecil County Dragway. If you remember, Bill was able to go 12.05 @ 116 MPH that day. Gotta Have It Race used the same wheels and tires, but only had a base tune that was used to raise the rev limiter so that we wouldn’t hit it in 4th gear before we got to the finish line. With a full tune installed with our SCT XCAL3 plus the addition of our JLT Cold Air Intake and Flowmaster Hushpower full catback, we were hoping to get a much better time.

CJ's 2013 Mustang – Gotta Have It Race

Even though it was still only 10:15 in the morning, it was very hot and humid already. Rich knew that he was going to have a challenge if he was going to beat Bill’s time in Gotta Have It Race, especially since he had not had the chance to take Gotta Have It Race down the track at all yet. Rich started his first pass by working on Bill’s recommendation of launching Gotta Have It Race at 4500 RPM and letting the clutch slip just enough without letting it bog. On the first run, it seemed that 4500 RPM was just too much for the track and the Mickey Thompson tires to handle, as Rich had instant wheel spin and only managed a 2.41 60’ time on his way to a 13.42 @ 113.6 MPH. Rich kept working on his launch, trying to find the best combination of RPM to launch at with just the right amount of clutch slippage. Thankfully, Rich had no problems with the shifter during his maiden passes in Gotta Have It Race, and found the Barton shifter and shifter bracket allowed him to power shift without having to worry about missing a gear.

By the time that Rich found the right combination of RPM and clutch slippage to get a good 60’ time, it was 1:30 in the afternoon and the heat and humidity were in full effect. He was able to make two decent back to back passes: 12.24 @ 114.1 MPH with a 1.84 60’ and 12.21 @113.9 MPH with a 1.85 60’. Earlier in the day, Rich set a new best for MPH with a 116.76, which beat our previous best of 116.05. We know that the new JLT Cold Air Intake and SCT XCAL3 tune are making good power, and even with the additional heat and humidity, we were able to post a new best MPH.

CJ's 2013 Mustang – Gotta Have It Street

Gotta Have It Street had not been to a track since the NMRA event at Maryland International Raceway on May 6, where we ran a best ET of 12.89 @ 104 MPH and a best MPH of 12.93 @ 109 MPH in completely stock trim. Rick made the first pass at 10:15 a.m. and ran what would be our best time of the day for Gotta Have It Street, a 12.49 @ 112.35 MPH with a 1.93 60’. That first run of the day was a big improvement over our previous best time. Even with the additional heat and humidity, we were able to knock off 0.4 of a second and gain over 3 MPH with just a 93 octane tune from our XCAL3! The tune helped improve the throttle response for Gotta Have It Street and increased the shift points from 6400 RPM to around 6800 RPM, which kept the 5.0L Coyote engine in its power band longer.

On the first run of the day, Rick brake torqued Gotta Have It Street at the start line. With the stock converter, we could only get the torque stall up to around 2000 RPM. Rick hot lapped the car because he wanted to see if he could get a better launch (and ET) by trying to flash the torque converter instead of brake torquing. The second run used that launch technique and produced an almost identical 60’ time, a 1.96 on the way to a 12.54 @ 112 MPH. We let the car cool down for a little bit, hoping that it could cool enough to make up for the rising heat and humidity. Just before noon, Rick made another pass and went 12.51 @ 112.4 MPH with a 1.96 60’. It was not an improvement, but gave him three passes that ranged from 12.49 to 12.54. Consistency like that is going to come in handy when Gotta Have It Street races in the Roush Super Stang class at the NMRA event in Milan Michigan in a few weeks.

Overall, we were very happy with the trip to Cecil County Dragway. We had a new best ET and MPH for Gotta Have It Street and Rich got some valuable seat time in Gotta Have It Race and set a new best MPH, despite the heat.

Our enthusiastic pit crew for Gotta Have It Street and Gotta Have It Race on Saturday.

So are you saying my tune is wrong for my JLT??????????????????
