71 Mach 1
Hi everyone!

I won a “72 Mach 1” in a local auction for $600. Turns out they got the year info from the door vin and they were donor doors, so it’s actually a 71. It not quite a basket case but it’s not super far off either. I’ve started the long resto process. So far I’ve regeared the rear end from the factory 2.8(?) to 3.77 (I think, it’s been a whole and I don’t feel like looking up my order just now). Swapped out the rear brakes for disc, painted the rear frame rails with some por-15, and have started tearing out the rusted trunk floor.

I actually got my rear disc conversion kit from summit for only like $400, but the intermediate e-brake cable is like a foot too long so I’ll have to find one that actually works in it but I’m not super concerned with that just yet. Current goal is to replace all the standard rusted-out areas (floors, trunk, fender aprons) that I can do myself and then get it to a body shop for the rear quarters and wheel wells.

If anyone wants to pass along any advice I’m more than happy to listen 😄

Welcome, I'm from Tulsa & still have numerous parts for 71-73's. I'm just finishing up a full restoration on one. I also do complete paint & body along w/ metal fabrication. I may not have the time, however, can offer tips or etc.

Welcome from Ohio! $600 sounds like a fantastic score...looking forward to some pictures.

Hi Mtande4,

Welcome to the forum and best of luck with your project.

I did a similar build on my 71 Mach 1. I bought it for $300. in the late 70s. Fortunately the frame rails and floor pans were solid.

My advice is to be sure to take accurate measurements from the top of the radiator support to the firewall before removing the fender aprons.

My biggest challenges were replacing the heater core, converting the automatic to stick shift and replacing the headliner.

Welcome from Ohio. Keep us updated on your build and take plenty of pictures so you can track your progress as you go along. Always nice to be able to look back at what you started with and the work you done.

Welcome from North Texas.
Sounds like you have your hands full. Enjoy the process.
Take lots of pictures to share.

Welcome from Oregon. Sounds like a good start to getting her all fixed up. By the time that you get all the standard rusted-out areas done, you might be up to the task of doing the body work yourself. Good luck!
