My Car
1972 Ford Mustang Sprint, 2V
I'm really glad I found a support forum for the 70s stang. So tired of going through forums and part sites and seeing no love for the big body.

I had a 69 I was working on then sold before I joined the Navy, then at my duty station here I was getting a ride to go buy a Nissan Frontier and I passed by a 72 Mustang for sale. Stopped the car and cash in hand :D

The guy I bought it from didn't know much about the car and I'm still figuring out all the little things that have been done to it. It's a Sprint, and the white interior is still there but some previous owner has gone for a black/white style. It has some damage behind the driver-side rear wheel, when I get it repaired it'll be in for a new paintjob so I'm trying to decide if I should turn the ship around and take it back to classic Sprint colors or keep moving with black and white, which I do love.

On the brightside I don't have a wife to nag me and the government gives me spending money to blow so every month she gets a lot healthier :p

Glad to be here and hopefully you can watch me get her back on her feet.

Unfortunately the numbers aren't matching. A rebuilt cleveland and C4 were put in 90,000 miles ago. 140k on the body.

Putting aside money for the bodywork, which'll be the last thing to finish it off. New carpet, dash cover, door panels, arm rests and a shift kit are going in this month. My friend had an old Grant GT GoCart-looking steering wheel I'm going to use for now since the original steering wheel is missing it's face, and is also still blue. Has new black/white scheme upholstery on the seats which seem pretty new and a new headliner. I'll take some pictures of the interior tomorrow.

She runs really strong, just starting is an issue. She'll turn and turn unless you have the gas floored. Sometimes she'll start right up then others she'll keep turning. But once she's going she's going. Once I finish off the interior for the most part I'll turn my attention to the engine. I'm living on base, so I'm pretty limited as far as being able to work on it myself which is a constant frustration. Unable to pull the engine so I have to take it to a shop every weekend to get anything done, which is getting pricey and annoying. Can't wait until they let some of us move off-base and I can get a garage back.

Id say this sounds like a choke issue; not hard to adjust, but its a tedious process to get perfect.

Note: Choke adjustment needs to be done when the choke is cold and therefore when the engine is cold.

Materials: Likely a phillips head screwdriver, optionally a 1/8" Drill bit or something of a similar width. Loosen the screws on the choke spring housing. Hold the drill bit between the choke plate and the carb and rotate the spring housing till the plate just barely touches the bit. Tighten the screws. Now this isn't perfect, but its a solid starting point. Small adjustments over time will allow you to get it right. Hopefully my advice isnt completely off the mark and helps you.

No hobby shop on base? When I was in the Navy there was a hobby shop with pros and everything. Pretty sweet setup, actually.

I'll definitely look into that tomorrow morning when she's cooled down and post back. I'll be replacing the carb and intake next month so hopefully I can address it more with some fresh parts.

As for a hobby shop, sadly there isn't. I'm on an Army post at a joint command. Not only is the food terrible, but so are the services available. As soon as I can move off-post I'll jump at the opportunity. That or wait for a friend to get off-post so I can rent their garage and roll up my sleeves a bit. The Navy keeps me incomprehensibly busy during the week so I only have time for my hobbies on the weekend unfortunately. My rating (CTI) is shore rotation only.

Looks like I'll be getting my parts from Ohio mustang. At least I can do interior myself here on base.

Welcome to the site! If you like the Sprint colors, I would go back to original, but it your car so fix it up the way you like. Keep us posted on the upgrades.

I'm torn up because I hate to take a Sprint from their dwindling numbers, but I love the black and white. I have quite a while until I repaint though. I'm pretty sure that the P.O. Maaco'd her. The paint isn't bad, but it's cracking on the rear driver quarter and the few chips reveal white. Priority one is just making sure she's running strong. I lucked out, no cancer just some surface rust in the usual places that I'll have taken care of when she goes to the body shop for the damage and priming. I'll take some more pictures tomorrow when it's lighter out and I go adjust the choke.

Welcome from me too

John Im in Brisbane Australia

white and blue is the way to go but

when its your car hay what ever colour

turns you on

sorry OZ spelling

mines red but I love purple

here in OZ we have a Ford colour

called "Phantom"(purple) its grouse

just like the Phantoms undies

its used on the XR6 and XR8 Falcons

the sports models

the six is a twin cam 4 Litre (245CI) @ 200KW (300HP)

and the eight is the 5.4 Litre (310 CI maybe)@317KW (400HP)

now we use the 5.0 litre super charged ( im thinking 302)

around the same power and both with six speed ZF auto

or six speed manual box

you can also get an XR6 Turbo @ 400 HP

we have been speaking bloody French since 1973

so sorry about the metric numbers

anyway welcome again from Australia

John

Hi and welcome to the site

::welcome::

I kinda like the black and white better than the sprint colors but it is a sprint, so.... I dunno.

I´m happy I don´t have to make that decision!:p

Welcome to the forums! great looking coupe! Either way you paint it will be fine, you can't choose wrong! :D

Welcome from Montevideo, Uruguay!!... Love to find another sprint hidden behind some other colour paint :)

If i were you, i´ll go for the sprint originality but with patience... You dont need to do it right away but if i were you, i´ll go for that road... you know, our era cars are getting valuable day after day and if you still can save a rare car, then if i were you, i´ll do that...

Do you have the marti report and that stuff?? Mayb from there you can get mor info about the specific options of your sprint :)

Glad to have you onboard!!

Like a lot of guys have said .....in the end she's your car so do what you want...plus since you mentioned that the original engine is already gone, makes it that much easier to restomod your way. Btw ::welcome:: to the site

Since the original engine is gone it does make me feel easier about other colors for it. But it's still a decision I'm really not enjoying! Thanks for the welcome :) I look forward to being here! I'm going to adjust the choke, run and grab some simple green and today hopefully clean out the engine bay as best I can while the weather stays nice. I'll post some pics when I'm back.
