So if I remember correct March 9, 1964 was the SOP for the Mustang and serial #1 vert rolled off the line.
There were over 200 made before the #1 so there are lots before the first, lol. They were prototypes and were used for testing and photo and to put in the Worlds Fair ride and exhibit. Some of those were brought back to factory and finished and sold due to the high demand.
Many think of the 64 1/2 hood as the one with the short flange in the front radius on the hood not hemmed down. The very first cars were different from those. They were hemmed down. The #1 in the Henry Ford Museum is hemmed down. But if you open the hood the reinforcement inside will not have the 5 gussets across near the front. The first hoods came off prototype tooling. The version that most call 64 1/2 with the flange pointing down were stamped at the Ohio stamping plant I believe.
I have personally only seen one true 64 1/2 fastback it was in a car show at the Asheville Civic Center in the 1970's. It was a cream color and had generator, cooling vents in the radiator support and the 20 some differences from 65 model. It also had production date early.
BTW if anyone has a 64 1/2 and needs a hood with the flange pointing down and not hemmed I have one dated in March of 64 so would be correct for any model. It has the 5 gussets so it is the second version and in July they were all hemmed again.
So if you ever see a hemmed hood with not gussets it would probably bring couple thousand dollars for one of the prototype collectors.
