You're in a good situation really. Since the W was an option in '71 you have a wide selection of headers to choose from!
Well I'm 0/2 on clearing the z-bar, have tried Hooker 6901HKR's and the Hedman Shorty 88600's both of which were no go's for my application.

Has anyone had success clearing the z-bar outside of the FPA headers?

Are you checking with them on the fitment before purchasing?

To my knowledge, the 351W was not an option for the 71-73 Mustang. It was available in the 70 Torino as a 2V. Hedman shows an engine swap header for 351W in a 71-73 Mustang. PN 88660. May still not work with the clutch linkage. Good luck. Chuck

Sure wasn't, but the 302 was, same Windsor family so the fitment is there for the headers. In other words, the manufactures can help find the proper ones to fit without resorting to custom or $2,000 set. My Cleveland with the FMX and PS leaves me with two choices total.

The block deck height on a 302 is 8.203", the 351W block deck height in 69-70 is 9.480" 71 and up is 9.500". The exhaust ports on a 351W would be significantly higher and closer to the shock towers than a 302. Perhaps there is something that will fit other than an engine swap header or custom. If there is I hope he finds it. Chuck

Nobody said the two engines were the same. The concept is there, the header manufactures have the information needed to help choose one that fits. You'll be suprised if you call them, they have always been very helpful with all of my swaps. Again, nobody said the two dispacements were the same, but they are from the same line (IE: Windsor family -vs- 335 or 385 or FE or Y block or Modular)

The H code 2 barrel 351 in the 70/71 Torino was a Cleveland and 351 Windsor was never an option for the 70/71 Torino but was in 69.

The additional deck height of the 351W moves the exhaust port vertically and horizontally .92", which is a huge amount for header fitment. Couple that with the 71-73 z-bar being in a different location than the 65-70 cars and you have a problem that often requires fabrication, or custom headers.

It's well documented that the Mustang/Cougar H-code cars of 1970 were Windsors at the start, until the production caught up to demand. It was my understanding that all of the initial Cleveland production capacity was dedicated to the 351-4V M-code engine. Was this not the case for the intermediates?
