Great site! Just found you all this week. Been hanging around the other ford sites for quite a while. Bought my 71 in highschool (1979). Work in progress. I'ts nice to see a site that all pertains to my ride. I couldn't be more pleased with the recepiton so far! I'll figure out the garage/pics/avatar later this week. Have a problem and am looking for advice;

I replaced the fuel pump/sending unit on my 71 w/in last couple of years. Fuel Gauge was working fine. Recently took instrument panel off to replace old bulbs. I cleaned up all the connections except the two fuel gauge male posts. Put back in and not much later noticed fuel gauge not working. I'd hate to take the dash apart again. Is there an easy (simple) way to check the sending unit or gauge? I read a couple other threads but did'nt quite understand them.

Thanks

Bill

Welcome from West Texas! Gorgeous engine & engine bay - can't wait to see the rest.

If the guys here can't help you get it fixed, it don't need fixin'... or something like that. Keep checkin' back - someone will help you get it figured out... these guys have forgotten more about '71-'73s than most people will ever know.

Welcome - nice looking car.

You can check the guage of temporarily grounding out the two wires at the sending unit to see if the guage moves. Use help and don't keep it grounded. If the guage moves - it's the sending unit. If not it is under the dash.

Now that is truely shade tree electronics. Someone else will along to confuse you with the facts.

Welcome to the site! It's great you managed to hang onto your car since 1979. Looking forward to seeing more pictures and hearing more stories about you and your 71.

My money is on having to remove the gauges again since it worked before you removed it. It's a loose wire somewhere. Mine too though since my sending unit checked out earlier today.

You can take the plug off the sending unit at the tank. The connection is on the driver's side behind the rear tire. Then with ignition on, use a spare piece of wire to ground the contacts inside the plug one at a time. One of the connections is ground for the fuel level sender, the other is the sense wire for the gauge and when the sense wire is grounded it will move the fuel gauge to full position. Hope that helps.

By the way, Welcome from Houston. Nice car.
