I got a new steering gear and pitman arm.

I need help on installing the pitman arm.

How do I know what position the pitman arms gets installed?

It has notches but it seems that it could be installed in 4 different positions.

I'd like to install the pitman arm before bolting the steering box onto the car.

Also, does it just bolt on or do I need the Insertion/puller tool.

Any help appreciated!

From memory the pitman arm only go's on one way due to the way the splines line up. When I've done them in the past I fit the pitman arm onto the steering box shaft and then useing a large socket as a drift, which fits over the steering box shaft, and clears the spline grooves of the arm, tap the arm fully on with a hammer, hitting the end of the socket to drive the arm home, somthing they go on easily other times you really need to belt them on.

I would not hammer on the sector shaft of a steering box. Let the nut pull it down when you tighten it. Lightly lube the splines. That also makes it easier to remove later since it's a wear item.

I agree with TOTALLED. I am putting one on now and it can only go on one way. Then just torque the nut to spec. Don't forget the lock washer too.
