Oil pan scraper and windage tray

Ok, I did a search and didn't see anything posted like this.

I am looking at getting a Canton large capacity oil pan. It has a built in crank scraper. I also thought about installing a windage tray. I know they are not the same but both do function to reduce the weight of oil attaching itself to the crank. Does it make sense to also buy the windage tray to go with it?

I thought the same thing, but a vendor is selling them together as a kit on ebay.

A large capacity pan is never a bad idea. It reduces the chance of the pick up being uncovered at extended high rpm or severe cornering. It also keeps the oil cooler. Windage trays and scrapers do work. How much they work is RPM dependent, most gains are above 4500 RPM. Windage trays are used by OEMs (ex. 4.6 & 5.0 Ford) which lends credibility to their usefulness. Canton builds some street/ track pans and road race pans. The extra $50 for the true road race pan is worth the money as it has 4 trap doors to keep the pick up covered.

Yup, my '92 SHO had a stock scraper/tray... had a mid-'90's SBC from a boat with one (tray)... and I see lots of them in the engine core pile at work from various OE manufacturers.

If they fit as a kit, I'd imagine it can't hurt. The more oil control, the merrier.

I have heard good and bad about windage trays. The good is it keeps oil from being thrown all over the place reducing oil aeration, freeing up some HP. The bad is, windage trays do such a good job that the lifters and camshaft suffer from reduced oil splash. I hear they can speed up wear on flat tappet camshafts and lifters with todays oil. I don't know maybe the bad is BS, I ran one on my 289 in my 66 Comet and it never had any problems. I plan on running a windage tray on my 351W that is replacing the 289 in my Comet, but I am also running a roller lifter camshaft.
