Does your breather cap have a filter of some kind in it? I've seen some that were open and allowed unfiltered air into the crankcase.

Yes a filter through the bottom.

First from the pic it looks like that's not the PCV (positive crank case Valve) that's a breather to the air cleaner from the rear right side valve cover. It should pull straight off but after many years the grommet has gotten hard from oil and age. I had to cut the grommet off and replace the plastic neck and grommet after painting. I have a spare neck if you need one I don't have a good grommet but you can buy one. I sure Don at (OMS) has them. Oops! I got in on this a little late I guess your all set. Sorry about the redundancy.
