Starter, flexplate, and C4

Today we turned the engine over by hand and it would scrape at the weight every time the weight passed. It was hard to make to make it past the weight. Any thoughts?

302 engine, C4 trans

Tried both starters with the same result.

What do you mean by "scrape at the weight" when turning it over by hand? Camshaft position or something? Need a little more info, please.

When turning it over by hand we heard a scraping sound. We switched starters and could still hear the scrape (no sound when the starter is not attached). After some trial and error we determined that the plate scrapes the starter every time the weight on the plate passes by.

OK, thanks. Sounds like a small repositioning of the weight should resolve the issue.

So we figured out the problem. When we attached the trans to the engine we did not line the drain plugs up on the torque converter to the flex plate.

We were able to put it on a rack, separate the two, and line it all back up.
