The tank in my 73 mach 1 has a fitting on top with 2 lines.  These 2 lines are looped together with a rubber hose, there is also a electrical connection.  The gas feed line is on the driver's side of tank, I believe this is correct.

Is this is the correct tank?  Where should lines on top be connected.

thanks

Bob

The sending unit should be on the drivers side of the tank with 1 line and the electrical connections.

On the top there should be a fitting with 1 line that runs to a charcoal canister in the engine compartment

It should not have any electrical connections on it

Agreed with Don, here's a PDF from the MPC.
Thanks for the diagram, I must have a tank from a later model car.  The PO did a lot of weird things to this car.

Any chance for some pictures of it? In particular the fittings and connector on top, the gas line connection, and the inlet (filler) pipe connection.
I haven't been able to upload pictures.  I sent a message to the administrator but haven't received any answer.  It may be that I'm a junior member.  I'm going to make a donation in a few minutes, maybe then I can add pics.

thanks

Bob

WTF!!

I'm not familiar with 73 Mustangs, but imo, that's NOT a mustang tank. Here's a pic of a new tank for my 71. I believe they are all the same though. (The solid rubber pads were added as originals were nfg.)

rjpohl, all 71-73 Mustangs used the same fuel tank (D1ZZ-9002-A). The same fuel sending unit was used on all 71-73's (D1ZZ-9275-A---ID# D1ZF-AA, AB, AC) except the 71 429CJ.

The sending unit shown in  your photo looks similar to some I used to sell that fit the saddle tanks in F-600, 700 and 800  trucks. I'm sure others will agree, you just never know what your going to see next when dealing with work from the "Shade Tree Garage"!   :whistling:

My illustration shows what the sender on your car should look like. Since the original Ford unit is next to impossible to find, I would contact Don @ Ohio Mustang Supply and check with him on a sender (his has the brass float) and a new tank.

Steve, the tank on OMS website looks like the Spectra Premium, which is made in Canada and 'turn coat' plated so it won't rust with Ethanol fuel.

Arguably the best repo there is and that's what I would recommend.

The sending unit looks good also, but my experience was it needed to be calibrated. Do it with 5 gallons (US) or 19 liters in an empty tank and adjust so it reads 1/4 full. It's the bottom end of the tank that is important, couldn't care less about if it reads full!!

Geoff.

Geoff, I remember what you went through when trying to obtain the correct sender for your car. I was hoping you would give some "Testimony" on the tank and what sender you finally used on yours. I trust Don since he is one of "US" and knows how much junk is out there and what it's like trying to find correct 71-73 parts that actually fit and work.

Just think what Ken (PastelBlue/7173Vert) went through on the one year only sender for his 71 429CJ Vert.

How is your filler pipe connected to the tank? Our years of Mustangs have a one-piece pipe that runs from the outside of the car, into the trunk, through a boot in the trunk floor, and finally through a rubber grommet into the tank. I'm guessing yours has been modified to fit whatever tank that is and you may need a new filler pipe when you get a new tank.

 Oh yes!! what an ordeal.

Basically, the one I originally bought from Rock Auto, made by Spectra Premium, was not for the Mustang although it was listed as such. The outlet tube was facing the wrong way. See pictures. I pointed this error out and it was removed from the listing. Rock Auto were very good and replaced it with a Dorman 692232 stainless steel sender with a brass float. This is what is in the car and I've had zero issues other than I needed to calibrate it at 1/4 tank. I'll not go into the fine details right now on that.

I also replaced ALL my fuel lines with stainless steel and fuel injector rubber hose where needed. No more worries with rust in the fuel if I ever need to run Ethanol crap. As I said, the tank was Spectra Premium and fitted perfectly. I did also buy an extra lock-ring kit and new rubber grommets and seals (if that makes sense!).

#1 the wrong way. #2 the right way. These were on the old tank while checking. #3 inlet grommet on new tank tank.

Now I'm wondering if someone was trying to convert to an in-tank fuel pump for fuel injection. Lousey way to do it by chopping a hole in the trunk floor.
IS THAT what was going on??? What a friggin mess. Time for a new trunk floor as well then...……. and new tank...……… and correct sending unit...…… and!!!!!
