´72 Mach1 R-code (2F05R1709xx),
´73 fastback H-code (3F02H1280xx),
and 4 other ´64-68 Mustangs.
Hello folks, just thinking about and I´m wondering too, what´s the public / collector´s most reputable Mustang from the era 1971-´73 ..?? What model, what engine, what features..., in this light the best of the owner´s and collector´s Mustang´71-´73.

Most of You will answer the model You have, and You are right! ::goodjob:: ..but I am curious for public (the true collector party) opinion. Thanks for every griff. Have a good day.. :)

From a "Collector's" standpoint, I would have to say it would be either the '71 Boss 351 (approximately 1,806 made) or the '71 429CJ/SCJ (approximately 1,865 made).

I would think the 71 Mach 1 with a 429 or a 71 Boss 351 would be amoung the most desired of the 71-73 Mustangs. The convertible or Sprints would be very collectible. Here are 3 71s that sold at Mecum in Indy this May. One is a Boss 351, one a 429 Mach 1, and one a 351 Mach 1. They all sold for $46-47k. I also agree that the one you have is the best one.

I don't think the general public could tell you what a 71-73 mustang is.

I think the rarest would be the most collectible and that would be a Q code 71, followed by a 71 429 with drag pack, then without drag pack, then Boss 351, then a 71 M code, then 72 Q codes (or maybe the reverse of those last two), then 72 HO, then 73 Q codes, then all the other 351s. The specific body styles I think would be Mach 1 then verts then all the rest.

That's just my guess, I'm sure others will rank them differently but I think this list is a good jump off point.

How could anyone argue with someone who has a coral as large as Dons'. Personally, I think it's always the first and last year that sell. That being said, 71 Q code followed By 429 Drag Pack then 73 Q code. Me I'm a sucker for first and last years

2005 Dodge Magnum RT

1973 Chevelle 454SS (everbodys got to try one) :p

1973 Mustang Mach 1 Q code

1998 Cougar 4.6

1988 Cougar 5.0

1968 Galaxie Covertable 302 xfered to 429

1966 Thunderbird 390

1973 Mustang H code converted to Q code

1968 Cougar 302 hi-po

1967 mustang 289

God I've had some fun cars!!! :D

72 sprint convertible :p

Okay - Boss 351's, 72 HO's and 429's take the coolness awards but imagine having a 429 convertible or HO ragtop. Those are really rare and who knows how many are left. The Shelby Europa is very cool but talk about really obscure.:sleepy:

+1 for sprint verts and very high energy verts.

Rarity (low production) does not always equal desirable....

The rarest of the performance Mustangs, if I'm not mistaken and please correct me if I am, is the 72 351HO convertible with 13-ish made. Will it fetch the $$ of a 71 B351 all things being equal? Nope, doesn't have the reputation nor the stigma of a Boss car.

From a true collector's standpoint, the Boss 351 and 429 Mach cars will always have the most desireability, followed by the 429 convertibles & sportroofs as a draw, then the hardtops. The 351 M & Q Machs would be next in line, with 71 being the top dog.

The top collectors in my opinion are 72 351 HO 71 Boss 351 all 429 cars. Then all 351C 4V Mach 1s, Sprints, Convertibles and Decor package coupes. All 4 Speed cars.
I agree with the 4 speed cars being desireable. This 73 4 speed convertible that I saw at Mecum Indy was very nice. Sometimes I wish I had ordered my car as a convertible.

+1 on all of those. I would think that a 72 HO convertable will / would be the rarest. Oh don't forget the 71 Boss 302 test mule car that was sold to the public with a motor change. I don't know how Ford got away with that. Surprised it didn't meet the crusher!

Your car in Convertible would be sweet. The Mach 1 is just more muscle car.

Answer this question?

I bought 2 parts cars,

A 73 convert with a 71 nose on it that had sat outside for 15 years - yuk!

The other one is a 71 convert M code all complete except it now has a 302.

the original C6 is still in the car

3.25 locker - drag pack

Working ram air with hood locks

Tach and gauges

A/C

Long console

PS and Brakes

This car sat inside a building for 15 years but needs torque boxes, floors, rails, trunck floor, and quarters.

The 73 convert I am building is a completely optioned out H code that needs quarters and trunk floor only.

Should I change the car that I plan to finish or maybe sell the M code as a complete car to fund the other project?

Hmmm......

I think it is a toss up. A 73 H code well optioned (last year for the vert) or a 71 M code with wrong engine (302), ram air, 3.25 posi & other goodies. Really I think it is a toss up. I would fix the car that's easiest to fix & would cost the least amount of money.

I submit that it depends on where your interest REALLY lie. If you are "into" the car PRIMARILY as an investment, that would entail one approach while if you are into it for another "specific enjoyment", that could necessitate a different approach.

Me, being a Modifier, would probably take my time and build both of them using big block Ford power as the motivation - - but that is just me:)!

Again, I would sit down and make an honest assessment as to what I want from the "journey" because in the end that is what it boils down to - - in my opinion. With the advancements in technology (and my age), I have come to understand that these cars are really NEVER done. And that my friends, is a very GOOD thing!!
