Got the rear axle pulled and outside cleaned up today (between helping the needy people at the shop). Pulled the pinion (the yoke is frozen on there, so it's soaking in PB Blaster for a run at it with the bearing splitter tomorrow if it still doesn't cooperate). The positive is that there's no water or visible wear to the ring and pinion gear teeth, or bearings for that matter. The negative is that the rear gear oil has turned into some kind of black sludge about 1.5" thick in the bottom of the case - it hasn't even lost its shape after sitting on its 'back' for several hours. I'll get a pic of that tomorrow before I clean it out.

The outside cleaned right up after picking the crusty greasy dirt clods out of the nooks and crannies, and a can of Permatex Gel Enging Degreaser. Still gonna hit it with the pneumatic wire brush and a fresh coat of black engine enamel before I toss it all back together with a rebuild kit.

Installed my new Griffin Radiator and Milodon high volume aluminum water pump.

Made custom brackets to hold the electric fan.

Took my son for a test drive.

Car barely heats up past the "T" on temp. Infared thermometer measured at the thermostat housing read 175 after a twenty minute drive. I may have to make a few adjustments to get it to run hotter! That was on old antifreeze leftovers and mostly water. tomorrow I'll drain it and put in fresh fluid and check for any sign of needing to ground the radiator.

Finally painted my car today (well my friend did)! It came out awesome, but there are some imperfections due to my cheap paint gun/filter dripping water from the air line connection. I am happy though, I can't complain for the price I paid for it. Plus I got a new car last week and changed the oil on it today (last picture) :D. It was a good day for mustangs.

Looking good Len! Someday I'll be at that point. Congratulations!

I've been quite open about the fact that I'm a mechanic not a body man. As easy as the DS rear bottom quarter went on, the PS (which is a short abbreviation for POS ) has tested my patience all day. Started at 8:00 this morning and at 5:30 realized I had my 4lb hammer out. Time to quit for the day. :-/

Got the diff out, pinion and yoke separated, axle seals pulled, axle bearings removed, and cleaned the snot out of the diff & carrier, pinion & yoke, and inside of the case. Next weekend should get it all back together with new bearings, seals, and fresh paint, then back under the car.

Here's the whole deal out of the car after a couple hours of pickin' grunge out of nooks & crannies:

Here's what's left of the 41-yr-old 90-weight from the bottom of the case. Almost solid enough to re-tar the roof:

Inside of the case after a trip through the parts washer - no water or rust inside, and came out pretty clean for the most part:

The diff's in great shape. The ring gear's teeth are still plenty sharp on the ends (ask me how I know), and the bearings still butter smooth - but they're outta here anyway:

Me either! The guys on this sight showed me how! How great is that? Keep at it and ask, ask ask when in doubt.

Eric, How did you know that that is next on my list? Thinking about getting it back on it's wheels. Great minds?

Called Don at OMS about my PS panel issue. Even though I didn't get the panel from him he's looking into it for me. The panel is just not right! There is no way it will line up and I called him to see if he has a replacement. Quality GUY!!

Mark the panel looks bent in to me.Try spreading it apart.Look at the angel of the trunk drop off flange where meets the bottom of the trunk drop off. It looks like the panel is a half inch low at the top edge.Do you have the quarter panel to far in at the taillight panel? loosen up the quarter from the taillight panel. I think I remember Scott saying that the taillight panel is to far to the left on these cars. I think if you spread open the panel a half inch or so It would fit better. These panels DON'T fit their just something to work with. You have to bend hammer and cut them it's just how it is. Mike

Mark before you buy another panel,I will send you this one. I did cut a small piece out to do my repair.Butt it might fit better than the panel your trying to use.If it fits better just cut the corner off your panel and weld on mine. Mike

I had a similar issue with the driver side quarter panel when I installed mine. I just drilled out the spot welds where the underside piece mounts up and made it fit the way it's supposed to. Once it's all lined back up, just weld it back up in that area as well.

Eric I think you hit the nail on the head. I'm willing to bet that's all it needs. Mike

I fought with mine for about 2 hours, and even considered getting out a big mallet to bend it to my will... but figured that it might have bad results somewhere else in the panel in the way of causing an unwanted crease or something. The light bulb went on and I realized that I now 'own' the panel, and with everything else I'd done (sheet metal-wisse), drilling out a couple spot welds was no biggie.

That's what worked for me, and yours looks very similar to my issue (just on the other side of the car). Good luck with it - I'll bet you get it squared away in no time.

Mark, drill the spot welds, you have nothing to lose and that might do it.

Don

Looks like it's going to be a non issue for a while. Just got a call from my Doc and it appears that one of the screws in my back has backed out into my spinal coloumn. Waiting on a call from the surgeon.

Oh no!! Well, do what the Doc says and get better. The car can wait 'til you're all back together. Good luck with it!

Yep looks like thats all it needs

Thanks Q and everyone else. I was actually thinking of cutting it down the center at the bottom and welding it after I fold it into place. But if the Body elite say drill, WE DRILL! After all that's what this forum is for!
