Mac, locating an original Ford unit could be a tough find. It was not a stand-alone option and was only available one-year (1973) on the first-generation Mustang as part of the Appearance Protection Group option ($36.00 on all models except Grande which was $23.38)  It was also used on other Ford car lines through 1979/80 and the 1974-1976 F100-F350.

Ford part# is D3FZ-1386-A. I did not check all my sources but a quick search turned up one on E-Bay.  https://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-1973-1979-SPARE-TIRE-LOCK-KEY-FORD-HOT-ROD-TRUCK-D3FZ-1386-A/273739602080?hash=item3fbc26d8a0:g:lt8AAOSwM4RcecuG

As you can see not a cheap item but at least the seller does have a "Make an Offer" option.

You could also check with Don @ Ohio Mustang Supply or Mike @ Motor City Mustang. They might have some NOS units or possibly some gently used ones looking for a new home.  Good luck with your search!

Unfortunately I sold the last spare tire lock/key a couple of months ago.  Don, Any chance you have any of these for Mac?

Thanks for the heads up on ebay.  I was hoping to find a good used one, but I may just have to bite the bullet and buy NOS.

That was one of the add on options I put on my Mach 1. Thought it would be good theft deterrent at shows with the space saver spare. Here is pic of it. You can get a trunk key cut with the spare lock on one side and the trunk on the other if you do not want to have the trunk lock tumblers changed.

Mac,

there were over 20,000 73 Mustangs equipped with this option so you would figure at least a few of 'em would be laying around in an old shoebox full of junk!  The D3FZ lock was used on the Mustang line through 1978 with the 79/ Fox Mustang utilizing a different lock. The lock was eventually discontinued in 1995 and was selling at a whopping $6.50! Sure would like to get in contact with Dr. Profesor Emment Brown and give him a wish list of things to bring back!!  :whistling:

As I stated earlier the seller does have a "Make an Offer" button and just might be in a Christmas mood! It doesn't hurt to give it a try!!    :D
